Sparrow Top by Anna Hull

What is Being Made

The Sparrow Top is a knitted garment designed to fit chest measurements ranging from 71–76 cm up to 152–157 cm, making it available in nine different sizes. This is an advanced beginner level knitting project that produces a fitted top with shaped armholes, a structured neckline, and a button-front closure featuring ten wood buttons (15mm). The garment combines classic tailoring with a modern construction technique.

Techniques Used

This pattern employs several intermediate knitting techniques that elevate it beyond basic projects. Decreasing at armholes is performed using a combination of methods: decreases are worked at each end of multiple rows, then continued on alternating rows, and finally on every fourth row to create a smooth, tapered armhole. Shoulder shaping is achieved through strategic cast-offs worked over several rows, creating a stepped shoulder line. Neckline shaping involves decreasing at the neck edge while simultaneously casting off stitches at the beginning of rows to form a structured front neck opening. The pattern also includes increases worked early in the garment using a make-one increase (M1) to add subtle shaping at the side seams.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns Used

The Sparrow Top is primarily constructed using ribbed knit, which provides elasticity and structure to the garment. The pattern specifies a special abbreviation Tw2R (knit two together through the back loop), indicating the use of twisted stitches that add textural interest and prevent the fabric from leaning. Ribbing is worked at the lower edge of the garment for the first four rows, establishing a neat, finished edge. The main body is worked in a patterned stitch using the ribbed construction throughout, creating a cohesive, structured fabric that holds its shape.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

The Sparrow Top is designed to be knitted using Rowan Creative Linen, a linen yarn supplied in 100-gram balls. The photographed sample shown is in the colorway Apple 629. Linen yarn produces a crisp, breathable fabric ideal for warm-weather garments, with natural drape and durability.

Two pairs of needles are required for this project: 4mm (US 6) needles for the ribbed edging and initial cast-on, and 4½mm (US 7) needles for the main body of the garment. The pattern is worked to a tension of 24 stitches and 27 rows over 10 centimeters when measured in pattern using the 4½mm needles, ensuring proper fit across all nine sizes.

Additional Hardware

The Sparrow Top requires ten wood buttons measuring 15mm (reference TGB4083 from Textile Garden) for the front closure, adding a natural, artisanal finish to the completed garment.
