Product Description
Spud & Chloe Lulu Leggings Knitting Pattern
What Is Being Made
The Lulu Leggings are a pair of women's knit leggings designed by Spud & Chloe by Blue Sky Fibers. These leggings are worked seamlessly from the top down and feature a fitted silhouette with a ribbed cuff at the top. Available in two sizes—Small/Medium and Medium/Large—the finished leggings measure 9½ to 11 inches in circumference and 18¾ inches in length with the cuff unrolled. The design combines solid-color stockinette stitch sections with striped colorwork throughout the leg for visual interest and dimension.
Techniques Used
This pattern employs several intermediate knitting techniques to create a polished, professional-looking finished garment:
- Seamless construction: The leggings are worked in the round using double-pointed needles, eliminating the need for seaming and creating a smooth, continuous fabric.
- Intarsia colorwork: The pattern uses intarsia technique to manage multiple yarn colors, requiring the use of separate yarn bobbins to prevent tangling and holes in the fabric. When changing colors, knitters bring the old color to the left and the new color to the right, with the twisted strands preventing holes in the finished work.
- Stripe pattern: Horizontal stripes are created by changing colors at specific intervals, with the pattern chart guiding color placement throughout the leg section.
- Top-down construction: Beginning with the ribbed cuff at the top, the leggings are knitted downward, allowing for easy length adjustments before binding off.
Stitches Used
The Lulu Leggings pattern incorporates two primary stitch patterns:
- Rib Pattern: A 2x2 rib (*K2, p2, rep from * around) is used for the cuff edging and top ribbing sections. This elastic stitch creates stretch and recovery, ensuring the leggings stay in place. The rib pattern is worked over a multiple of 4 stitches and maintains consistent gauge at 36 stitches and 40 rounds per 4 inches on size 1 needles.
- Stockinette stitch: The main body of the leg is worked in stockinette stitch (knit all rounds), which creates a smooth, flat fabric ideal for displaying the striped colorwork. Stockinette stitch gauge is 29 stitches and 39 rounds per 4 inches on size 2 needles.
Materials and Tools
The Lulu Leggings pattern requires yarn in five coordinating colors from the Spud & Chloe collection: Glow Worm (MC/main color), Cricket, Clementine, Calypso, and Anemone. Knitters will need size 1 and size 2 double-pointed needles (dpn) for the ribbed sections and stockinette stitch body, as well as size 3 double-pointed needles for picking up stitches for the top cuff edging. Additional supplies include one stitch marker, five yarn bobbins (optional but recommended for managing the intarsia colorwork), and a tapestry needle for weaving in loose ends. Blocking the finished leggings is recommended to set the stitches and ensure proper fit and drape.
