What is Being Made

The Stripey Wristlets are a pair of fitted hand coverings designed to keep wrists warm while allowing full finger mobility. These wristlets are worked from the knuckles up toward the wrist and feature a functional thumb hole for comfortable wear. With a finished circumference of 8 inches and a length of 4¾ inches, they are sized to fit most adult wrists. The pattern is beginner-friendly and can be completed with just one 50-gram hank of yarn.

Techniques Used

The Stripey Wristlets are constructed using two primary knitting techniques: working in the round and working flat. The majority of the wristlet is worked in the round using double-pointed needles, which creates a seamless, tubular fabric. The thumb hole is created by temporarily switching to flat knitting for six rows, then rejoining the work in the round to continue the wristlet. This combination of techniques allows for a custom-fitted opening while maintaining the smooth, continuous construction of the main body.

Stitches Used

Two primary stitch patterns are employed in this design:

• Stockinette Stitch: This is the main stitch used for the body of the wristlets. When worked in the round, stockinette stitch is created by knitting every stitch in each round, producing a smooth, V-patterned fabric. When worked flat during the thumb hole section, stockinette is achieved by knitting all right-side rows and purling all wrong-side rows.
• Rib Pattern: A 2x2 rib (knit 2, purl 2) is used for the cuff sections at both the cast-on edge and the bind-off edge. This elastic ribbing helps the wristlets stay securely in place and provides a professional, finished appearance. The rib pattern is worked over a multiple of 4 stitches and is repeated for three rounds at the beginning and three rounds near the completion of each wristlet.

Materials and Tools

The Stripey Wristlets are knitted using Spud & Chloë Stripey Fine yarn, a lightweight option that requires only one 50-gram hank (191 yards) to complete both wristlets. The yarn is worked on Size 3 (3.25mm) double-pointed needles, or whatever needle size is necessary to achieve the specified gauge of 26 stitches and 37 rounds equaling 4 inches in stockinette stitch. Additional tools include a stitch marker for tracking the beginning of each round and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends during finishing.
