Overview

The Lisa Hat and Cowl is an easy-level knitting pattern designed by Rosemary Drysdale, featuring two coordinating accessories that can be made from a single yarn ball each. This downloadable PDF pattern offers versatile construction techniques, allowing knitters to choose between working in the round or working flat depending on their preference and available needles.

Hat Construction

The Lisa Hat is knitted in the round using a seamless construction method, beginning from the bottom and working upward. The hat features a classic one-size design with an 18-inch (45.5cm) circumference and approximately 9 inches (23cm) in height. The pattern begins with a cast-on of 94 stitches worked on a 16-inch circular needle, establishing a foundation for the accessory.

The hat construction incorporates a K1, P1 ribbed cuff worked for 15 rounds, which provides elasticity and helps the hat sit securely on the head. Following the ribbed section, the main body is worked in the Ridged Pattern stitch, a textured stitch that alternates between knit and purl rows to create visual interest. The pattern stitch consists of 5 knit rounds followed by 3 purl rounds, repeating this 8-round sequence until the piece reaches 8½ inches from the cast-on edge.

Crown shaping is accomplished through strategic decreases that transition the hat from its full circumference to a fitted crown. The shaping uses ssk (slip, slip, knit) decreases and p2tog (purl 2 together) decreases to gradually reduce stitches. The pattern calls for changing to double-pointed needles when the circular needle becomes impractical due to the reduced stitch count. The final stitches are drawn together and secured, with an optional pompom that can be sewn to the crown for added embellishment.

Cowl Construction

The Lisa Cowl offers an alternative construction method, worked flat rather than in the round. The cowl measures 17 inches (43cm) in circumference and approximately 9 inches (23cm) in height. This piece begins with a cast-on of 48 stitches and is worked back and forth in rows rather than continuously in the round.

The cowl uses a worked-flat technique with seamed finishing, meaning the knitter works rectangular rows and then seams the edges together to form the tubular cowl shape. The construction begins with edge stitches (slip 1 knitwise on right-side rows) to create neat selvage edges suitable for seaming. This approach provides an alternative for knitters who prefer working flat or who may not have circular needles available.

Techniques and Stitches

The Lisa Hat and Cowl pattern employs several fundamental knitting techniques:

  • Worked in the round: The hat is constructed using circular needles and double-pointed needles to create a seamless tube
  • Worked flat: The cowl is worked back and forth in rows on straight or circular needles, then seamed
  • Seamless construction: The hat requires no seaming, with stitches joined at the beginning of the round
  • Seamed construction: The cowl edges are sewn together after the flat piece is completed
  • K1, P1 Ribbing: A fundamental elastic stitch used for the hat cuff
  • Ridged Pattern stitch: An alternating knit and purl pattern that creates horizontal texture
  • Ssk (slip, slip, knit): A left-leaning decrease used for crown shaping
  • P2tog (purl 2 together): A purl decrease used in the crown shaping sequence

Materials and Yarn Specifications

Both the hat and cowl are designed to be made from Stacy Charles Fine Yarns Tina, a premium yarn composed of 90% extra fine merino and 10% polyamide. This fiber blend provides softness, breathability, and durability. Each project requires one 1.75-ounce (50-gram) ball, which contains 165 yards (154 meters) of yarn. The pattern specifies color Y6629 bonfire, though the design would work with other colorways from the Tina yarn line.
