What is Being Made

The Maeve Poncho is an easy-level knitted cape-style garment designed by Karen Tatro. This poncho features a relaxed, comfortable silhouette available in two sizes: S/M with finished measurements of 30"/76cm width and 22¾"/58cm length, and L/XL with finished measurements of 35"/89cm width and 26"/66cm length. The poncho is designed to be worn as a layering piece and includes functional button closures.

Techniques Used

The Maeve Poncho is worked flat on circular needles rather than in the round, meaning it is constructed in separate pieces that are later seamed together. This flat-working method allows for easier shaping and buttonhole placement. The pattern employs the Cable Cast-On technique for creating new stitches, particularly when working buttonholes. Pieces are worked from side to side, with the front and back constructed separately before assembly. All edges are bound off loosely knitwise to maintain flexibility and prevent tight finishing.

Stitches Used

The Maeve Poncho utilizes two primary stitch patterns. Stockinette Stitch (knit on right-side rows, purl on wrong-side rows) forms the main fabric body and creates a smooth, classic appearance. Garter Stitch (knitting every row) is used for structural sections, including the bottom band and edge details, providing texture and stability. The pattern also incorporates buttonhole rows worked in garter stitch, created using the bind-off and Cable Cast-On methods to form functional closures.

Materials and Tools

The Maeve Poncho is knitted using Stacy Charles Fine Yarns GEMMA, a sustainable blend composed of 63% recycled cotton, 27% recycled polyester, and 10% polyamide. The yarn is available in color #238 embers. Pattern requirements call for 9 balls for the S/M size and 12 balls for the L/XL size, with each ball containing 1.75oz/50g and 137 yards/125 meters.

Construction requires US size 10 (6mm) circular needles measuring 24–32"/60–80cm in length, though needle size may be adjusted to achieve the specified gauge. Additional supplies include stitch markers for tracking pattern placement, a yarn needle for weaving in ends and seaming pieces together, and two buttons measuring 1⅛"/28.5mm in diameter for the poncho closures.

Gauge and Finishing

Proper gauge is essential for achieving the correct finished dimensions. The pattern specifies a gauge of 17 stitches and 26 rows equals 4"/10 centimeters in Stockinette stitch when blocked. Knitters are advised to take time to check gauge before beginning the project to ensure accurate sizing. All bind-offs are worked loosely knitwise to maintain the fabric's natural drape and flexibility, contributing to the poncho's comfortable wear.
