Stacy Charles Fine Yarns Marjorie Wrap

Project Overview

The Marjorie Wrap is an intermediate-level knitted shawl designed by Lisa Hoffman. This elegant wrap is worked flat on circular needles and features a seamless construction with decorative cable detailing throughout. Available in two sizes—Medium and Long—the wrap offers versatile dimensions to suit different preferences and styling needs.

Finished Dimensions

  • Medium: 17"/43cm wide by 60"/152cm long
  • Long: 17"/43cm wide by 67"/170cm long

Knitting Techniques

The Marjorie Wrap employs several intermediate knitting techniques to create its sophisticated appearance. The garment is worked flat on circular needles, which provides stability and comfort when working with a large number of stitches. The construction is seamless, eliminating the need for finishing seams and creating a polished, professional result.

Cable work forms the primary decorative element of this wrap. The pattern features two main cable stitches: C12F (cable 12 front) and C12B (cable 12 back). These cables are created by slipping 6 stitches to a cable needle, holding it to either the front or back of the work, then knitting 6 stitches from the left needle followed by 6 stitches from the cable needle. This technique creates the dimensional, twisted rope-like texture that defines the wrap's visual interest.

The wrap also incorporates i-cord side edgings, which frame the piece with a neat, finished border. The pattern uses slipped stitches throughout, all slipped as if to purl, which helps maintain clean edges and a polished appearance.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

  • Stockinette Stitch: Used as the base fabric, creating a smooth, classic knit surface
  • Cable Pattern: A 16-row repeat featuring C12F and C12B cables combined with knit stitches and reverse stockinette sections
  • Decreases and Increases: Strategic k2tog (knit 2 together) decreases and m1 (make 1) increases are incorporated in specific rows to shape the wrap
  • Slipped Stitches: Used at edges and throughout for a refined finish

Materials and Gauge

The Marjorie Wrap is designed to be knitted with Stacy Charles Fine Yarns TAYLOR, a luxurious blend of 45% wool, 25% cashmere, and 30% viscose. This fiber composition creates a wrap that is both warm and elegant, with the cashmere providing softness and the viscose adding drape and sheen. The yarn is available in color 201137 Cranberry, a rich, sophisticated hue.

  • Yarn Requirements: 9 balls for Medium size; 11 balls for Long size
  • Yardage per Ball: 132 yards/120 meters per 1.75oz/50g ball
  • Needles: US 8 (5mm) 24"/60cm circular needle
  • Additional Tools: Cable needle, stitch markers, and yarn needle

The pattern specifies two gauge measurements to ensure proper fit and drape. In Stockinette Stitch, the gauge is 16 stitches and 22 rows over 4"/10cm. In the Cable Pattern, the gauge is 25.5 stitches and 25.5 rows over 4"/10cm. Checking gauge before beginning is essential for achieving the correct finished dimensions.

Pattern Structure

The Marjorie Wrap is organized into three distinct parts. The pattern includes a detailed CENTER section with a 16-row repeat that forms the main body of the wrap. This repeat is worked multiple times (16 or 19 additional times depending on size) to build the length of the wrap. Shaping rows are incorporated strategically, with decreases in Part 2 and increases in Part 3 to create the wrap's final silhouette. The pattern concludes with additional rows to complete the design.

All pattern instructions use standard knitting abbreviations and are clearly marked for right-side and wrong-side rows, making it easy to follow the progression of the wrap from cast-on to bind-off.
