String Avery Hat: Luxurious Cashmere Knit with Cable Details
What Is Being Made
The Avery Hat is a sophisticated, seamless knitted hat designed by Lidia Karabinech. This one-size hat features an elegant cable knit pattern and is crafted from 100% cashmere yarn for exceptional softness and warmth. The finished hat measures 20 inches (53 cm) in circumference and 9½ inches (24 cm) in height, making it a versatile accessory suitable for various head sizes with comfortable stretch. The design is completed with a decorative pom pom, adding a refined finishing touch to this luxury knit.
Techniques Used
The Avery Hat is constructed using several advanced knitting techniques that create both structural integrity and visual interest:
- Seamless, worked in the round: The entire hat is knitted in continuous rounds using circular needles, eliminating the need for seaming and creating a smooth, professional finish.
- Bottom-up construction: The hat is worked from the ribbed border upward to the crown, allowing for easy adjustments to fit and length.
- Cable knit patterns: Multiple cable stitches are incorporated throughout the design, including front and back cables of varying widths that create dimensional texture and visual depth.
- Twisted stitches: The pattern includes twisted knit and purl combinations (T3F and T3B) that add complexity and interest to the cable panels.
- Decrease techniques: Specialized double decrease methods (LDD and RDD) are used to shape the crown and create a polished finish.
Stitches Used
The Avery Hat employs a comprehensive range of knitting stitches to achieve its sophisticated appearance. The foundation includes basic knit and purl stitches worked in the round. Cable stitches form the primary design element, with the following variations:
- C2F and C2B: Two-stitch cables crossed to the front and back, creating small twisted rope effects.
- C3F and C3B: Three-stitch cables that produce more prominent twisted columns.
- C4F and C4B: Four-stitch cables offering bold, dramatic twists.
- T3F and T3B: Twisted stitches combining knit and purl elements, adding textural variation within cable panels.
- LDD and RDD: Left and right double decreases that elegantly reduce stitches during crown shaping.
These stitches are organized into repeating 26-stitch cable panels that measure 5 inches (12.5 cm) wide, with four panels repeated around the circumference to create a balanced, all-over pattern.
Materials and Tools
The Avery Hat is made from premium materials chosen for luxury and performance:
- Yarn: STRING CLASSICA, 100% cashmere in the oatmeal colorway (color 201227). The project requires 2 balls, with each ball containing 1.75 ounces (50 grams) and 125 yards (115 meters) of yarn.
- Needles: Two pairs of circular needles are required—size 6 (4mm) needles measuring 16 inches (40 cm) long for the ribbed border, and size 8 (5mm) circular needles of the same length for the main pattern. Double-pointed needles (DPN) in size 8 (5mm) are used for working the crown decreases when stitches become too few for circular needles.
- Additional tools: A cable needle for manipulating cable stitches, stitch markers to track pattern repeats and rounds, a yarn needle for weaving in ends, and a pom pom for the crown finish.
Gauge and Fit
Achieving proper gauge is essential for this project. The cable panel gauge is 5 inches (12.5 cm) wide over the 26-stitch repeat when worked on size 8 (5mm) needles. Knitters are strongly advised to knit a gauge swatch and adjust needle size as needed to match the specified measurements, ensuring the finished hat will fit correctly and display the cable pattern as intended.
