Product Description
Swans Island Stream Pullover
What is Being Made
The Swans Island Stream Pullover is an intermediate women's knit sweater designed by Isabell Kraemer. This seamless pullover features a classic crew neck construction and is available in six sizes ranging from XS to L/XL, with finished bust measurements from 30¾ inches to 45 inches and finished lengths from 23 inches to 26½ inches. The garment shown in the pattern is sized Small.
Construction Techniques
This pullover is worked using several key techniques that define its construction:
- Top-Down Seamless Construction: The sweater is knit from the top down in a seamless method, eliminating the need for seaming pieces together after knitting.
- Worked in the Round: The body and sleeves are primarily worked in continuous rounds using circular needles, which creates a smooth, tubular fabric without side seams.
- Stripe Pattern: The design features a repeating stripe pattern worked in stockinette stitch, alternating between yarn colors. The pattern repeats every 6 rounds, working 4 rounds in Color B followed by 2 rounds in Color C throughout the garment.
Stitches Used
The Stream Pullover employs fundamental knitting stitches suitable for intermediate-level knitters:
- Stockinette Stitch: The primary stitch throughout the garment, created by knitting all stitches on right-side rounds and purling all stitches on wrong-side rows when working back and forth.
- Knit and Purl Stitches: Basic knit (k) and purl (p) stitches form the foundation of the stockinette fabric.
- Decreases: Knit 2 together (k2tog) and slip, slip, knit (ssk) decreases are used for shaping.
- Increases: Left-leaning (m1L) and right-leaning (m1R) make-one increases add stitches for shaping the body and sleeves.
- Double Stitch (DS): German short rows are incorporated for shaping, creating smooth contours in the garment.
Materials and Gauge
The pattern calls for premium organic merino wool and merino-alpaca blend yarns in three colors:
- Color A (Indigo): 1 skein of Swans Island Natural Colors Collection, 100% organic merino wool, fingeringweight, 100 grams and 525 yards per skein (YF107).
- Color B (Seasmoke): 2 to 3 skeins (depending on size) of Swans Island Natural Colors Collection Pure Blends, 85% organic merino wool and 15% alpaca, fingeringweight, 100 grams and 525 yards per skein (YF121).
- Color C (Indigo/Natural Ikat): 1 to 2 skeins (depending on size) of Swans Island Natural Colors Collection-Ikat, 100% organic merino wool, fingeringweight, 100 grams and 525 yards per skein (YFI101).
Gauge: 6½ stitches and 10½ rows or rounds equals 1 inch in stockinette stitch using the larger needles.
Needles Required: US size 4 (3.5mm) 16-inch and 29-inch circular needles plus double-pointed needles for the gauge specified in the pattern, and US size 3 (3.25mm) 32-inch circular needles and double-pointed needles for ribbing or other sections. Additional notions include stitch markers, stitch holders or waste yarn, a yarn needle for finishing, and one ½-inch button.
