What is Being Made

This is an intermediate-level knitted sweater designed by Gréta Björk Jóhannesdóttir and adapted by Védís Jónsdóttir. The sweater is available in three sizes: Small (chest 97 cm / 38¼ in), Medium (chest 108 cm / 42½ in), and Large (chest 118 cm / 46½ in). The length to the centre front neck edge ranges from 64 cm to 70 cm depending on size, with sleeve length to underarm measurements between 41 cm and 45 cm.

Construction Method

The sweater is constructed using a seamless, top-down circular knitting method. The body and sleeves are worked in the round from the lower edge to the underarms, then the sleeves are joined to the body before working the yoke section. This construction technique eliminates the need for seaming and creates a continuous, professional finish.

Stitches and Techniques Used

• Stockinette stitch (st st) - worked in the round using knit stitches on each round, forming the primary fabric texture
• Ribbing - used at the cuffs and hem for elasticity and definition
• Chart-based colorwork - Chart 1 is used to create patterned sections in the design
• Increases - strategic increases are worked at the beginning and end of rounds, particularly in the sleeves (1 stitch at beg and end of every 9th round for 4-6 times depending on size)
• Grafting - underarm stitches are grafted together to join the sleeves to the body seamlessly
• Stitch holders - used to hold stitches at underarm and neckline areas during construction

Yarn and Materials

This sweater is knitted using Álafoss Lopi yarn, an Icelandic wool yarn supplied in 100 g balls. The design features a sophisticated colorwork pattern using multiple shades:

Tension and Gauge

The pattern specifies a tension of 13 stitches and 18 rows to 10 cm measured over stockinette stitch using 6 mm needles. Achieving the correct tension is essential for proper fit; knitters should adjust needle size if their gauge does not match the specified measurements.
