Product Description

The Cherry Lane Socks and Cowl pattern is part of the Stitch Red campaign, started by Laura Zander to educate knitters, fiber artists and their friends and families about the dangers of heart disease.

The Cherry Lane pattern is for both a cowl and a pair of cuff-down socks featuring columns of rope-like twists that look like cables but are knit entirely with simple decreases and yarnovers. Easy to remember and surprisingly quick to knit, these socks and cowl will be beautiful and long lasting in Sweet Georgia Tough Love Sock yarn. Stitch patterns are both charted and written out.

SweetGeorgia Cherry Lane Socks and Cowl

What Is Being Made

The Cherry Lane pattern is a downloadable knitting PDF that includes instructions for creating a coordinating set of two garments: a pair of top-down socks and a matching cowl. Both pieces feature the same signature lace design, allowing knitters to create a cohesive, coordinated look using a single yarn.

Design Overview

Cherry Lane is characterized by elegant columns of rope-like twists that visually resemble traditional cable stitches. However, the design cleverly achieves this textured appearance using only simple lace techniques—specifically decreases and yarnovers—rather than the more complex cable manipulations. This makes the pattern accessible to knitters seeking a sophisticated aesthetic without advanced cable-knitting skills. The lace pattern features continuous increases and decreases throughout, with no resting rounds, creating dynamic visual interest across the fabric.

Techniques Used

Lace knitting is the primary technique employed in this pattern. The lace motifs are created through strategic placement of yarn overs (yarn forward increases) paired with decreases such as knit two together (k2tog), slip slip knit (ssk), and slip one, knit two together, pass slipped stitch over (sl1 k2tog psso). These fundamental lace techniques combine to produce the characteristic rope-twist columns without requiring cable needle manipulation.

The socks are worked top-down, meaning knitting begins at the cuff and progresses toward the foot. Construction begins with a stretchy cast-on method, followed by ribbing at the cuff before transitioning into the lace pattern repeat.

Materials

Yarn: SweetGeorgia Yarns Tough Love Sock, a high-performance sock yarn composed of 80% superwash merino and 20% nylon. One skein of 425 yards (384 meters) per 4 ounces (115 grams) is required. The pattern specifies the "Cherry" colorway, which is SweetGeorgia's designated "Stitch Red" colourway.

Needles and Notions: US 1 (2.25 mm) circular needles in either 32-inch or 40-inch length, with needle size adjusted as needed to achieve proper gauge. Additional notions include 2 stitch markers and a tapestry needle for finishing.

Sizing and Gauge

The socks are designed with a foot circumference of 7.5 inches, with the fabric stretching to accommodate a 8.5-inch foot. Gauge is measured at 8.5 stitches over the lace pattern at the specified needle size.

Pattern Details

The sock pattern begins with a cast-on of 60 stitches, worked in the round using a stretchy cast-on method (long-tail cast-on is noted as an acceptable alternative). After one inch of k2, p2 ribbing, knitters transition into the lace pattern, which is then worked continuously throughout the leg and foot sections. The lace repeat is intricate and requires consistent attention, as there are no plain rounds to provide visual breaks or recovery time.

This pattern is suitable for knitters with intermediate lace experience and represents Version 1.0 of the design by Felicia Lo. A portion of profits from each pattern sold supports the Stitch Red campaign, a charitable knitting initiative.
