Product Description
Slackcountry Socks from SweetGeorgia are knit from the cuff down with twisted stitches in an elegant rib and cable pattern. The twisted stitches make for crisp and defined columns in this design. The twisting and turning lines in these socks look like fresh ski tracks within straight boundary lines. The columnar pattern itself is like a ribbing, so you cast on and dive right into the pattern stitches. No separate ribbed cuff is needed. These socks feature a reinforced Dutch heel for strength and durability. Instructions are both written and charted except for the stitch pattern instructions for the toe, which is only charted.
Sizes: Women’s S/M (M/L)

SweetGeorgia Slackcountry Socks: Top-Down Twisted Stitch Design
What is Being Made
Slackcountry Socks are a pair of women's socks designed by Alison Green and knit from the top down. Available in two sizes—Women's S-M and M-L—these socks feature an elegant combination of twisted stitches arranged in columns with tiny cable crosses throughout the leg and foot. The design is inspired by the aesthetic of ski tracks winding through marked boundaries, creating a dynamic visual pattern that elevates a functional garment into a stylish accessory.
Techniques and Construction Methods
These socks are constructed using several key knitting techniques suited to intermediate-level crafters. The pattern begins at the cuff and works downward in the round, eliminating the need for a separate ribbed cuff section. Knitters cast on and immediately dive into the patterned stitches, which function as a built-in ribbing due to their columnar structure.
The twisted stitches are central to the design's visual appeal. By knitting through the back of the loop (abbreviated as k tbl in the pattern), these stitches create crisp and well-defined columns that stand out distinctly against the background. The pattern also incorporates tiny cable crosses, which require the use of a cable needle to temporarily hold stitches while crossing them over one another, adding textural interest and complexity to the sock leg.
A reinforced Dutch heel is worked into the construction for added strength and durability in this high-wear area. The sole of the foot transitions to stockinette stitch for comfort during wear, providing a smooth surface underfoot while the patterned leg showcases the twisted stitch and cable work.
Stitches Used
- Knit stitch (k): The foundational stitch used throughout the sock
- Knit through back of loop (k tbl): Creates the twisted stitches that form the crisp, defined columns in the pattern
- Cable crosses: Worked with a cable needle to create the tiny cable crosses interspersed throughout the design
- Stockinette stitch (St st): Used for the sole of the foot for comfort and smooth wear
Materials and Yarn Options
Slackcountry Socks require one skein of yarn with approximately 400–425 yards of yardage. The pattern recommends two yarn options, both from SweetGeorgia Yarns:
- SweetGeorgia Yarns Tough Love Sock: 425 yards per 4 oz / 113 g skein, composed of 80% superwash merino and 20% nylon. The nylon content provides durability for harder-wearing socks.
- SweetGeorgia Yarns BFL Sock: 400 yards per 4 oz / 113 g skein, made from 80% superwash Bluefaced Leicester wool and 20% nylon. This option is specifically highlighted for creating especially durable socks.
The sample shown in the pattern was knit in the Pistachio colorway. Both yarn options feature superwash treatment, making the finished socks easy to care for with machine washing.
Needles and Tools
The pattern calls for US size 1 / 2.25 mm needles, which are sized to achieve the correct gauge for a properly fitting sock. Knitters have flexibility in their needle choice for working small circumferences in the round:
- Double-pointed needles (dpns)
- One long circular needle using the Magic Loop method
- Two circular needles
Additional notions required include stitch markers to track pattern repeats, a cable needle for working the cable crosses, and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and grafting the toe closed.
Gauge and Sizing
Achieving correct gauge is essential for properly fitting socks. The pattern specifies a gauge of 32 stitches and 48 rounds over 4 inches / 10 cm in stockinette stitch. Over the cable pattern, the gauge is 42 stitches over 4 inches / 10 cm. Knitters are advised to check their gauge before beginning to ensure accurate sizing and to adjust needle size if necessary.
Skill Level
Rated as an intermediate project, Slackcountry Socks require familiarity with knitting on double-pointed needles, circular needles, or the Magic Loop method for working small circumferences in the
