SweetGeorgia Talinum Lace Cowl

What Is Being Made

The Talinum is a large, lightweight lace cowl designed by Tabetha Hedrick for SweetGeorgia Yarns. This cowl features bright, bold colours that transition from pink to orange, making it an ideal accessory for welcoming warmer months. The finished cowl measures 10¼ inches (26 cm) in width and 60 inches (152.5 cm) in circumference, providing generous coverage while remaining breathable and comfortable for spring and summer wear.

Construction Method

The Talinum cowl is worked flat from side to side, meaning the knitter creates a rectangular panel that is later seamed along the cast-on and bind-off edges to form the circular cowl shape. This construction approach allows for easier colour changes and stitch pattern management. Alternatively, knitters may choose to use a provisional cast-on and graft the ends together for a seamless finish.

Stitches and Techniques Used

This pattern is classified as an Easy skill level project, making it accessible to knitters with basic experience. The primary stitch pattern is the Talinum Stitch, which is worked over 16 rows and combines fundamental knitting techniques with lace elements.

  • Knit (k) – the basic knit stitch
  • Purl (p) – the basic purl stitch
  • Knit two together (k2tog) – a right-slanting decrease used to create the lace openings
  • Yarn over (yo) – creates decorative eyelet holes characteristic of lace knitting
  • Slip stitch (sl) – worked with yarn in back (wyib) at the beginning of rows for a clean edge
  • Yarn in front (wyif) and yarn in back (wyib) – positioning techniques that control yarn placement for proper stitch formation

The Talinum Stitch pattern repeats every 16 rows and features multiple yarn-over and decrease combinations that create an open, airy lace fabric. The pattern includes instructions for working the stitch in a single solid colour or with the multi-colour gradient approach.

Colour Progression

The pattern is designed to be worked in five distinct colours from the SweetGeorgia Yarns Party of Five Set in Jelly Bean. The colours transition in the following order: Colour A (Orchid), Colour B (Clementine), Colour C (Tangerine), Colour D (Persimmon), and Colour E (Dutch). The colour-blocking creates a gradient effect that moves from pink through orange tones. Knitters have the flexibility to work the entire cowl in a single solid colour by disregarding the colour-change instructions if preferred.

Materials and Gauge

The Talinum cowl is knitted with SweetGeorgia Yarns Party of Five Set in Jelly Bean, which contains 525 yards (480 metres) of yarn total. This yarn is composed of 80% Superwash Merino and 20% Nylon, providing durability, softness, and easy care characteristics suitable for a lightweight spring accessory.

The pattern is worked on Size 7 US (4.5 mm) needles, though knitters should adjust needle size as needed to obtain the correct gauge. The required gauge is 18 stitches and 31 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in the Talinum stitch, measured in stretched and blocked fabric. Achieving proper gauge is essential for the cowl to reach the intended finished measurements.

Pattern Structure

The cowl is constructed in six distinct sections, each working specific colour combinations and repeating the Talinum Stitch pattern multiple times. This sectional approach makes it easy to track colour changes and pattern progression throughout the project. The modular design allows knitters to understand exactly where they are in the pattern and when to transition to new colours.
