Product Description
Tahki Yarns Arcadian Pullover
What is Being Made
The Arcadian Pullover is a knitted sweater designed by Irina Poludnenko, available in six sizes ranging from Small to 3X. This pullover features a finished bust measurement of 37 to 67 inches (94 to 170 cm) and a length of 23½ to 27 inches (59.5 to 68.5 cm), making it a versatile garment suitable for various body types and proportions.
Construction Techniques
The Arcadian Pullover is worked flat on straight needles and constructed using a bottom-up approach, meaning the body is knitted from the lower edge upward. The garment is seamed together, requiring assembly after individual pieces are completed. This traditional construction method allows for precise shaping and fit adjustments throughout the knitting process.
The design incorporates stranded colorwork, a technique where multiple yarn colors are carried across the back of the work to create intricate patterned designs. This method adds visual interest and texture while maintaining the structural integrity of the knitted fabric.
Stitches and Pattern Details
The Arcadian Pullover employs several key stitch patterns to create its distinctive appearance:
- Stockinette Stitch (St st): The foundation stitch used throughout much of the garment, created by knitting on the right side and purling on the wrong side to produce a smooth, classic knitted fabric.
- Reverse Stockinette Stitch (Rev St st): The inverse of stockinette stitch, achieved by purling on the right side and knitting on the wrong side, creating a textured, bumpy surface.
- Slip Stitch Triangles: A decorative pattern repeat based on a multiple of 12 stitches. This stitch pattern uses slip stitches worked purlwise with yarn held at the wrong side of the work, combined with knit and purl stitches to create triangular motifs. The pattern requires 16 stitches and 32 rows to measure 4 inches (10 cm).
- Slip Stitch Dashes: Another textured pattern variation that incorporates slip stitches to form dash-like designs across the fabric. This pattern requires 18 stitches and 24 rows to measure 4 inches (10 cm) and features a 48-row repeat.
All slip stitches throughout the pattern are worked purlwise with yarn held at the wrong side of the work, a technique that creates clean, neat edges on slipped stitches and contributes to the overall polished appearance of the colorwork design.
Materials and Tools
The Arcadian Pullover is knitted using Tahki Yarns TUCSON, a blend of 52% cotton and 48% wool. This fiber composition creates a fabric with breathability from the cotton content combined with the elasticity and warmth of wool. The yarn is provided in 1.75-ounce (50-gram) balls, each containing 108 yards (100 meters).
The pattern requires the following yarn quantities and colors:
- 6 to 10 balls in color #11 tumbleweeds (Color A) — the primary color used throughout the garment
- 2 to 3 balls in color #01 raspberry (Color B) — used for stranded colorwork accents
- 2 to 3 balls in color #10 white sands (Color C) — used for stranded colorwork accents
- 2 to 3 balls in color #06 lake (Color D) — used for stranded colorwork accents
The sweater is worked on size 9 (5.5mm) straight needles for the body pieces and a size 9 (5.5mm) circular needle measuring 16 inches (40 cm) for the neckband. Additional tools include a stitch holder for holding stitches, stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points, and a yarn needle for weaving in ends and seaming pieces together.
Gauge Information
Achieving proper gauge is essential for the Arcadian Pullover to fit correctly. The pattern specifies two different gauges depending on the stitch pattern being worked: the Slip Stitch Triangles pattern should measure 16 stitches and 32 rows over 4 inches (10 cm), while the Slip Stitch D
