Tahki Yarns Asbury Park Cardigan

What Is Being Made

The Asbury Park Cardigan is a classic knitted cardigan designed by Teresa Chorzepa, offered in four sizes ranging from Small to XL. This garment features a bust measurement of 37 to 49 inches with a finished length between 23½ and 25 inches, designed to fit with 3 to 5 inches of positive ease for a comfortable, relaxed fit. The cardigan is an ideal project for knitters seeking a timeless, wearable piece with straightforward construction.

Techniques Used

The Asbury Park Cardigan is constructed using seamed and worked flat techniques, making it accessible for knitters of all skill levels. The pattern begins with the back piece worked flat on straight needles, followed by the front pieces. The fronts are then joined to the back using a circular needle to work the body in the round, demonstrating a practical approach to garment construction that combines flat and circular knitting methods. This hybrid technique allows for efficient shaping and seamless transitions between pattern sections.

Stitches Used

The Asbury Park Cardigan employs several fundamental knitting stitches and techniques:

  • Garter Stitch: Used for the initial 9 rows of the back, creating a textured, reversible fabric that provides structure and definition at the garment's edges
  • Stockinette Stitch (St st): The primary stitch used throughout the body, creating a smooth, classic knit fabric
  • Reverse Stockinette Stitch (Rev St st): Incorporated for 8 rows to add visual interest and textural variation to the design
  • Increases: M1L (Make 1 Left) and M1p (Make 1 purlwise) techniques are used for shaping, creating new stitches without visible holes
  • Decreases: K2tog (knit 2 together), P2tog (purl 2 together), and ssk/ssp (slip, slip, knit/purl) techniques are employed for fitted shaping

The pattern features a repeating 22-row sequence worked five times, creating a rhythmic, easy-to-follow structure that combines stockinette and reverse stockinette sections for visual texture and depth.

Materials

The Asbury Park Cardigan is worked in Tahki Yarns OSPREY, a blend of 87% cotton and 13% polyamide. This fiber composition creates a breathable, durable fabric suitable for warm-weather wear. The pattern requires 8 to 11 balls depending on size, with each ball weighing 1.75 ounces (50 grams) and containing 148 yards (135 meters) of yarn. The recommended color is #56485 sunrise.

The pattern calls for US size 5 (3.75 mm) needles for the main fabric, with a US size 5 (3.75 mm) circular needle measuring 36 inches long used when working the fronts and body together. The gauge is 20 stitches and 30 rows over 4 inches in pattern stitch, making this a beginner-level project suitable for knitters developing their foundational skills. Additional materials include stitch markers for tracking pattern sections and a yarn needle for finishing and seaming.

This free pattern cost me almost $100 in yarn and I cannot understand it. I've done the back and love the way it looks, but I am stuck. Is the "established pattern" the original 14 rows stockinette and 8 rows reverse stockinette? How many times? Is there a picture of the front? And just where do the sleeves go?
