What is Being Made
The Atwood Pullover is a knitted sweater designed by Susan Mills. This pullover is available in six sizes ranging from Extra Small to 2X, with finished bust measurements from 33½ inches (85 cm) to 54½ inches (138.5 cm) and lengths from 23¾ inches (60.5 cm) to 27¼ inches (69 cm). The design features a classic pullover silhouette with a lace panel detail and a fitted neckline.
Techniques Used
The Atwood Pullover employs several key knitting techniques that create visual interest and structure:
- Bottom-Up Construction: The sweater is knitted from the bottom upward, allowing knitters to try on the garment as it progresses and adjust length as needed.
- Worked Flat: The body and sleeves are worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, making this an accessible project for knitters who prefer traditional flat knitting methods.
- Seamed Assembly: Pieces are sewn together after completion, creating clean, professional-looking seams that contribute to the sweater's finished appearance.
- Lace Patterning: A 17-stitch lace panel is incorporated as a decorative element, featuring yarn overs and decreases that create an openwork design approximately 3 inches (7.5 cm) wide.
- Raglan Shaping: The armholes are shaped using raglan decreases, which create diagonal lines from the underarm to the neckline for a flattering fit.
- Neckband Construction: The neckline is finished with a ribbed band worked on a circular needle, providing a polished edge and comfortable fit around the neck.
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches combined with lace techniques:
- Stockinette Stitch (St st): The primary stitch used for the body of the sweater, creating a smooth, classic fabric with knit stitches on the right side and purl stitches on the wrong side.
- Ribbing (K2, P2): Used for the neckband and likely for cuffs and hem edges, this alternating knit and purl pattern creates an elastic, fitted edge.
- Lace Pattern Stitches: The decorative 17-stitch lace panel incorporates yarn overs (yo) for creating holes, along with single and double decreases including k2tog (knit two together), ssk (slip, slip, knit), k3tog (knit three together), sssk (slip, slip, slip, knit), and sk2p (slip one, knit two together, pass slipped stitch over). These decreases are paired with yarn overs to maintain stitch count while creating the openwork lace design.
- Decreases for Shaping: The pattern employs various decrease techniques for raglan shaping, including standard decreases and double decreases to achieve the garment's fitted silhouette.
Materials
The Atwood Pullover is designed to be worked in Tahki Yarns CLASSIC SUPERWASH, a 100% superwash wool yarn. Yardage requirements range from 5 skeins for the smallest size (XS) to 9 skeins for the largest size (2X). Each skein contains 3.5 ounces (100 grams) and provides 218 yards (199 meters) of yarn. The recommended color for this pattern is #17 peacock.
The pattern requires two pairs of straight needles in different sizes to achieve proper gauge and fabric characteristics: size 6 (4mm) needles for the main body and size 5 (3.75mm) needles for ribbed edges. A 16-inch (40 cm) circular needle in size 5 (3.75mm) is needed for working the neckband. Additional notions include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points, and a yarn needle for seaming pieces together and weaving in ends.
Gauge and Difficulty
The pattern specifies a gauge of 19 stitches and 24 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) when working stockinette stitch with the larger size 6 (4mm) needles. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements. The Atwood Pullover is rated as an Easy project, making it suitable for beginner knitters
