Product Description
Tahki Yarns Bradley Beach Tee
Garment Overview
The Bradley Beach Tee, designed by Joan Forgione, is a classic knitted cotton pullover sweater available in six sizes ranging from Small to 3X. This versatile summer garment features a relaxed fit with bust measurements from 34¼ inches to 54 inches and lengths from 25½ inches to 28 inches, making it suitable for various body types and style preferences.
Construction Method
This sweater is knit from the bottom up, utilizing a combination of construction techniques. The body is worked in the round on a circular needle from the cast-on edge up to the armholes, which provides a seamless construction in the body. Once the armholes are reached, the piece is divided for the front and back, which are then worked flat on straight needles to complete the shoulder and neck shaping. The sleeves are worked in the round using double-pointed needles from the armhole down to the cuff. The finished garment features seamed construction where the sleeves are attached to the body.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The Bradley Beach Tee employs several key knitting techniques to create its structure and visual interest. The primary stitch used throughout most of the garment is Stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic knit fabric. Additionally, the pattern incorporates Twisted Barred Rib as a textured stitch element, adding visual depth and subtle patterning to the design.
Decreasing techniques are essential to the garment's shaping. The pattern utilizes s2kp2 (slip 2 stitches together as if to knit 2 together, knit 1 stitch, pass slipped stitches over), which creates a centered double decrease. This technique is used strategically at side panels and during armhole shaping to create elegant decreases that slope in a balanced manner. Standard k2tog (knit 2 together) decreases are also employed throughout the pattern for additional shaping at the armholes and other areas requiring single decreases.
The pattern includes detailed instructions for managing decreases at the end of rounds, requiring the knitter to slip stitches, manipulate them on the needle, and work them in a specific sequence to maintain pattern integrity and stitch marker placement.
Gauge and Fit
Proper gauge is critical for achieving the correct finished measurements. The pattern specifies two different gauges depending on the stitch pattern being worked: 21 stitches and 30 rows equals 4 inches in Stockinette stitch, and 27 stitches and 30 rows equals 4 inches in Twisted Barred Rib. Knitters are strongly advised to take time to check both gauges before beginning the project to ensure accurate sizing.
Materials Required
The Bradley Beach Tee is designed to be knitted with Tahki Yarns BAJA, a 100% cotton yarn available in color #02 sand. The yardage requirements vary by size, ranging from 6 balls for the Small size to 10 balls for the 3X size. Each ball contains 1.75 ounces (50 grams) and provides 147 yards (135 meters) of yarn.
The pattern requires the following needles and tools: one size 6 (4mm) circular needle measuring 32 inches long for working the body in the round, one set of size 6 (4mm) double-pointed needles for working the sleeves in the round, and one G-6 (4mm) crochet hook specifically for creating the neck edging. Additional supplies include stitch markers to track pattern repeats and shaping points, a stitch holder or waste yarn for temporarily holding stitches, and a yarn needle for weaving in ends and seaming the sleeves to the body.
