Tahki Yarns Canby Pullover

About This Design

The Canby Pullover is an intermediate-level knitted sweater designed by Pam Grushkin. This pullover is worked using a bottom-up construction method with seamed seams and flat knitting techniques. The pattern is available as a downloadable PDF and offers seven size options ranging from Small through 4X, with the sample garment shown in size Small.

What Is Being Made

The Canby Pullover is a classic pullover-style sweater featuring a crew neckline. The garment is constructed with a fitted silhouette, offering finished bust measurements from 39½ inches (100.5 cm) in the Small size up to 63½ inches (161.5 cm) in the 4X size. The length ranges from 24¼ inches (62 cm) to 27¾ inches (71 cm) depending on the size selected. This is a versatile everyday sweater suitable for various occasions and seasons.

Knitting Techniques Used

The Canby Pullover employs several key knitting techniques that define its construction and finishing:

  • Bottom-Up Construction: The sweater is knitted from the bottom hem upward, allowing knitters to try on the garment as they progress and easily adjust the length if needed.
  • Flat Knitting: The pattern is worked flat on circular needles rather than in the round, creating separate pieces that are later joined together.
  • Seamed Assembly: Individual pieces are seamed together using a yarn needle, creating defined seams that contribute to the garment's structure and finished appearance.
  • Three-Needle Bind-Off: This special technique is used to seam two pieces together while binding off simultaneously, creating a secure and decorative join. The pattern notes that for a decorative seam on the right side, the bind-off can be worked with wrong sides facing each other.
  • Double Stitch: A special stitch technique is employed in this pattern where yarn is positioned in front, a stitch is slipped to the right-hand needle, yarn is brought over the needle to the back with firm tension, and both legs of the stitch are later knitted together as a single stitch.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The Canby Pullover uses fundamental knitting stitches and abbreviations throughout its construction:

  • Stockinette Stitch (St st): The primary stitch pattern used for the body of the sweater, creating a smooth, classic fabric with a flat appearance on the right side and bumpy texture on the wrong side.
  • Knit (k) and Purl (p) Stitches: The basic building blocks of all knitting, used in combination to create the stockinette stitch base.
  • Knit Two Together (k2tog): A decrease stitch used to shape the garment and create the three-needle bind-off seams.
  • Make 1 Left (M1L): An increase stitch referenced in the pattern abbreviations for shaping the sweater where needed.
  • Slip Marker (sm): Used to mark important points in the pattern, such as the beginning of rounds or shaping sections, helping knitters track their progress through the pattern.

Materials and Gauge

The Canby Pullover is designed to be worked with Tahki Yarns Whistler, a blend of 80% wool and 20% mohair that provides warmth, softness, and a subtle sheen. The yarn is available in color 12 peacock for this pattern. Yardage requirements range from 12 balls (approximately 1,188 yards) for the Small size to 21 balls (approximately 2,079 yards) for the 4X size. Each ball weighs 1.75 ounces (50 grams) and contains 99 yards (91 meters).

The pattern calls for US 5 (3.75mm) circular needles measuring 24 inches (60 cm) long, or the size necessary to obtain the correct gauge. A spare US 5 needle is also required for the three-needle bind-off technique. The target gauge is 20 stitches and 30 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in stockinette stitch when blocked. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for the sweater to fit properly, and knitters are advised to take time to check their gauge before beginning the project.
