Tahki Yarns Carramore Knitted Sweater
What is Being Made
The Carramore is an intermediate-level knitted sweater designed by Vanessa Malone. This pullover garment is available in seven sizes ranging from XSmall to 3X, with finished bust measurements from 32 inches (81.5 cm) to 56 inches (142 cm) and length measurements from 24 inches (61 cm) to 27 inches (68.5 cm). The sweater features a sophisticated cable knit design as its primary visual element.
Techniques Used
The Carramore is constructed using several key knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate-level crafters:
- Bottom-up construction: The sweater is knitted from the bottom edge upward, allowing knitters to try on the garment as they progress and adjust length as needed.
- Worked flat: The pattern pieces are knitted flat on circular needles rather than in the round, then seamed together to create the finished garment.
- Seamed assembly: Individual pieces are joined using yarn needle seaming techniques to create a polished, professional finish.
- Cable knitting: The design prominently features cable stitches as decorative and structural elements throughout the sweater.
Stitches Used
The Carramore employs a variety of stitches to create its textured appearance:
- Stockinette Stitch: The foundational stitch used for the main body fabric, created by alternating knit rows on the right side with purl rows on the wrong side, producing a smooth, classic knit texture.
- Ribbing: Used at the cuffs and hem for elasticity and structure. The ribbing pattern alternates knit and purl stitches to create vertical lines that help the garment hold its shape.
- Small Cable Pattern: A panel of 8 stitches featuring the cable cross stitches C4B (cable 4 back) and C4F (cable 4 front), which are worked over a 4-row repeat. This creates a twisted rope-like texture.
- Large Cable Panel: A more complex 74-stitch cable panel measuring 11 inches (28 cm) wide that combines multiple cable techniques including C4B, C4F, Tw4B (twist 4 back), and Tw4F (twist 4 front) stitches, creating an intricate interlocking cable design across the sweater front and back.
- Cable abbreviations: C4B and C4F involve slipping stitches to a cable needle to create the characteristic twisted effect. Tw4B and Tw4F are twist stitches that combine knit and purl stitches on the cable needle for added visual complexity.
Materials and Tools
The Carramore pattern calls for specific materials to achieve the intended finished garment:
- Yarn: Tahki Yarns Donegal Tweed, a 100% new wool yarn in color #802 light teal. Yardage requirements range from 6 skeins (for XSmall) to 11 skeins (for 3X), with each skein containing 3.5 ounces (100 grams) and 183 yards (167 meters).
- Needles: Multiple circular needle sizes are required. A size 8 (5 mm) circular needle measuring 24 inches (60 cm) long is used for the main body knitting. A size 8 (5 mm) circular needle measuring 16 inches (40 cm) long is used for the cowl neckline. A size 6 (4 mm) circular needle measuring 16 inches (40 cm) long is used for ribbing and cowl work. A size 10 (6 mm) circular needle measuring 16 inches (40 cm) long is also used for cowl construction.
- Additional tools: Stitch markers to track pattern repeats and shaping, a cable needle for manipulating stitches during cable crossings, and a yarn needle for seaming pieces together and weaving in ends.
Gauge and Pattern Information
Achieving proper gauge is essential for this project. The pattern specifies 16 stitches and 24 rows equal 4 inches (10 cm) in Stockinette Stitch when worked on size 8 (5 mm) needles. The large 74-stitch cable panel measures 11 inches (
