Product Description

Traditional tweed, stripes, and stranded colorwork make the Tahki Yarns Carson City Scarf, Hat, & Mittens Set a standout project. Donegal Tweed is a classic single-ply Irish wool with contrasting color flecks spun in to provide extra color and texture. This timeless yarn is perfect for colorwork of all kinds, and the Carson City Set showcases that beautifully. Three shades of yarn stripe, bobble, and strand to create finished pieces that are cozy, warm, and have a striking style. Each project is knit from the bottom up and features color effects that coordinate with those on the other items. Mittens are knit seamlessly in the round from cuff to tip with an integrated thumb gusset, scarf is knit flat from end to end, and earflap hat is also knit flat from the bottom up and seamed during finishing. Understated style that will have wide appeal is part of the charm of the Carson City Set, and the palette of Donegal Tweed makes it a snap to customize your project palette! Stranded colorwork is charted only.

Carson City Hat, Scarf & Mittens Set by Tahki Yarns

What is Being Made

The Carson City pattern is a three-piece coordinated set designed by Rosemary Drysdale, consisting of a knitted hat, scarf, and mittens. Each piece can be made individually or as a complete ensemble. The scarf measures 7 inches wide by 65 inches long, the hat has a 19-inch circumference, and the mittens are 11 inches in length. This intermediate-level project uses Tahki Yarns Donegal Tweed, a 100% pure new wool yarn, in three coordinating colorways: amber, dark khaki, and cream.

Techniques Used

The Carson City pattern employs multiple knitting techniques to create visual interest and texture. Stranded colorwork is used throughout, incorporating Fair Isle patterns from multiple charts to create intricate designs. The pieces are worked flat on straight needles for the scarf and hat sections, while the mittens utilize seamless, in-the-round construction using double-pointed needles for a finished appearance without seaming. The pattern also features decorative picot edging, which is created by casting on and binding off stitches within individual stitches to form a delicate, scalloped border. Bottom-up construction is used, meaning pieces are worked from the lower edge upward to the finished top.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The foundation of this project is stockinette stitch, which provides a smooth, classic knit fabric base. The pattern incorporates Fair Isle colorwork using multiple charts (Chart I, Chart II, and Chart III) to create patterned sections with stranded yarn techniques. Decreases using knit 2 together (k2tog) are employed for shaping. Decorative picot rows are worked by casting on 3 stitches into a single stitch and immediately binding them off in the same stitch, creating a series of small loops along the edge. The pattern also features cream stripes and amber stripes, which are created by working rows in stockinette stitch while alternating between the three yarn colors to produce horizontal striped sections.

Materials and Gauge

This pattern requires Tahki Yarns Donegal Tweed yarn in three colors: 2 skeins each of color #806 amber (A) and color #895 dark khaki (B), and 1 skein of color #848 cream (C). Each skein contains 3.5 ounces and 183 yards of 100% pure new wool. If making individual pieces rather than the complete set, 1 skein of each color is sufficient. Needles include US size 7 (4.5mm) straight needles for flat sections and US size 7 (4.5mm) double-pointed needles for the mittens. A crochet hook size H-8 (5mm) is also required for the scarf and hat. Additional notions include stitch holders, stitch markers, and a yarn needle for finishing.

The gauge is 18 stitches and 22 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch. Checking gauge before beginning is essential to ensure the finished pieces match the intended measurements.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate, making it suitable for knitters with some experience. The combination of stranded colorwork, multiple stitch patterns, seamless construction, and decorative techniques requires familiarity with fundamental knitting skills and comfort working with color changes and chart reading.
