What is Being Made

The Coast Redwood Hat is a knitted winter hat designed by Irina Poludnenko. This one-size hat features ear flaps and measures approximately 22¾ inches (58 cm) in circumference with a length of 11½ inches (29 cm), excluding the ear flaps. The design combines two distinct yarn types to create a textured, layered appearance suitable for cold-weather wear.

Techniques Used

This hat is constructed using top-down construction, meaning the knitter begins at the crown and works downward toward the brim. The main body is worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, which allows for easier stitch manipulation during shaping. The finished pieces are then seamed together to create the final hat structure. The ear flaps are incorporated during the edging phase using crochet techniques, adding both functional warmth and design detail to the finished garment.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch throughout the hat is Stockinette stitch, created by knitting all stitches on the right side and purling all stitches on the wrong side. This classic stitch produces a smooth, uniform fabric with a distinctive V-pattern texture on the finished side.

Shaping is accomplished using standard decreasing and increasing techniques:

• K2tog (Knit 2 together) – a right-leaning decrease worked by knitting two stitches together through the front loops
• Ssk (Slip, slip, knit) – a left-leaning decrease created by slipping two stitches individually knitwise, returning them to the left-hand needle in reversed position, and knitting them together through the back loops
• M1 (Make 1) – an invisible increase made by lifting the strand between needles and working it through the back loop with a twist to prevent holes

The edging utilizes single crochet (sc), a fundamental crochet stitch worked by inserting the hook into the next stitch, yarning over, drawing the yarn through, then drawing through both loops on the hook. This creates a finished edge and integrates the crocheted ear flaps into the hat structure.

The Coast Redwood Hat requires two complementary yarns from Tahki Yarns:

• Tahki Yarns MONTANA – 100% pure wool in color #02 bark (A). One hank provides 130 yards (120 meters) at a weight of 3.5 ounces (100 grams)
• Tahki Yarns GLACIER – 100% superfine alpaca in color #02 bark (B). One skein provides 35 yards (32.5 meters) at a weight of 1.75 ounces (50 grams)

Additional supplies include one pair of size 13 (9 mm) straight needles, one size M-13 (9 mm) crochet hook for the edging, stitch markers, stitch holders, and a yarn needle for weaving in ends. The recommended gauge is 9½ stitches and 15 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in Stockinette stitch using the specified needle size.
