Product Description
Tahki Yarns Concert Ticket Tank
What Is Being Made
The Tahki Yarns Concert Ticket Tank is a sleeveless knitted sweater designed by Irina Poludnenko. This tank top features a classic striped pattern and is available in four sizes: Small, Medium, Large, and XL. The finished bust measurements range from 36 inches (91.5 cm) for the Small size to 49½ inches (125.5 cm) for the XL size, with back length varying from 23 inches (58.5 cm) to 26 inches (66 cm) at the longest point depending on size.
Techniques Used
This knitting project employs several fundamental garment construction techniques. The tank is worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, allowing for a traditional two-dimensional knitting approach. The construction follows a bottom-up method, meaning the garment is built from the lower edges upward toward the shoulders and neckline. The finished pieces are seamed together to create the final garment shape. The design incorporates stripes as a primary visual element, with alternating color blocks creating visual interest throughout the tank.
Stitches Used
Seed stitch serves as the primary stitch pattern for this tank top. Seed stitch is created by alternating knit and purl stitches in a checkerboard-like formation. In Row 1, you work knit one, purl one across the row. In Row 2, you knit the stitches that appear as purl stitches and purl the stitches that appear as knit stitches, creating a textured, reversible fabric with excellent drape and minimal curling. This stitch is worked consistently throughout the front and back pieces of the tank.
The stripe pattern is achieved by working 14 consecutive rows with color A (pearl), followed by 14 rows with color B (anthracite), then repeating this sequence. This creates bold, evenly-spaced horizontal stripes across the entire garment. The pattern also incorporates standard shaping techniques including increases worked at regular intervals (every other row) to shape the sides and underarm areas, and strategic bind-offs to create the neckline and armhole shaping.
Materials and Gauge
The Concert Ticket Tank is knitted using Tahki Yarns RIPPLE, a 100% mercerized cotton yarn. Mercerized cotton provides a lustrous finish, excellent stitch definition, and breathability, making it ideal for a sleeveless summer garment. Each ball contains 1.75 ounces (50 grams) of yarn with 142 yards (130 meters) of yardage. Depending on size, the project requires 3 to 5 balls each of two colors: pearl (color #01) and anthracite (color #11).
The pattern is worked on size 5 (3.75mm) needles. Both straight needles and a 16-inch (40cm) circular needle in this size are specified, with the circular needle likely used for neckline finishing. The gauge is 20 stitches and 40 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) when working in seed stitch. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper fit, as gauge determines the final dimensions of the finished garment.
Construction Notes
The front and back pieces are constructed using different methods. The front is worked from side to side, meaning you cast on stitches along what will become the side seam and work horizontally toward the center. The back is worked from the lower edge upward, with increases worked at regular intervals on both sides to shape the underarm and side seams. This mixed approach creates an interesting construction that allows for precise shaping and pattern placement. Stitch holders, stitch markers, and a yarn needle are used to manage stitches during construction and for seaming the finished pieces together.
