What is Being Made
The Currant Mountain Pullover is a classic knitted sweater designed by Rosemary Drysdale. This pullover is available in five sizes ranging from Small to 2XL, with finished bust measurements from 40 inches (101.5cm) to 56 inches (142cm) and length measurements from 20½ inches (52cm) to 25½ inches (65cm). The pullover features a traditional crew neckline and is constructed using a seamed, worked-flat construction method, making it an ideal project for knitters with advanced-beginner skill levels.
Techniques Used
This pullover employs seamed construction, meaning the front, back, and sleeve pieces are knitted separately in flat panels and then sewn together. The worked-flat technique allows knitters to work back and forth on straight needles rather than in the round, making it easier to maintain consistent stitch tension and read pattern rows. The pattern includes shaping techniques such as shoulder shaping and neck shaping, which are accomplished through strategic bind-offs at the beginning of rows to create the proper garment silhouette. The neckband is worked using a circular needle, demonstrating a hybrid approach that combines flat and circular knitting methods.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch pattern used throughout the Currant Mountain Pullover is K1, P1 Rib, a fundamental ribbed stitch that alternates knit and purl stitches. This versatile stitch pattern appears in two variations within the design. The standard K1, P1 Rib is worked as follows: on right-side rows, knit one stitch followed by purling one stitch, repeating this sequence to the end of the row; on wrong-side rows, the pattern reverses to maintain the rib texture. A second Rib Stitch Pattern variation is also employed, which works knit one and purl one on right-side rows, while wrong-side rows are worked entirely in purl stitches. These ribbed patterns create vertical texture and natural elasticity, making them ideal for cuffs, waistbands, and neckbands. The pattern also incorporates M1L (Make 1 Left), an increase technique that lifts the strand between needles and works it through the back loop to prevent creating a visible hole in the fabric.
Materials and Tools
The Currant Mountain Pullover is knitted using Tahki Yarns IDAHO, a wool-blend yarn composed of 80% wool and 20% acrylic. This fiber content provides warmth and durability while the acrylic addition enhances ease of care and affordability. The yarn is available in color #2107 mountainside. Each ball contains 100 grams (3.5 ounces) of yarn with 93 yards (85 meters) of yardage per ball. Depending on the chosen size, knitters will need between 7 and 11 balls to complete the pullover. The project requires US size 13 (9mm) straight needles for the main body pieces and a US size 13 (9mm) circular needle measuring 16 inches (40cm) for working the neckband. Additional tools include stitch markers to denote pattern repeats and shaping points, stitch holders to temporarily secure stitches during construction, and a yarn needle for seaming the pieces together and weaving in ends. Proper gauge is essential for this project; knitters should achieve 11 stitches and 15 rows over 4 inches (10cm) when working in the Rib Pattern stitch.
