The ribbing pops in Superwash Merino Bulky, a thick two-ply Merino wool yarn that’s got a soft, plush feel. Each piece of this pullover is knit flat from the bottom up and seamed with a turtleneck picked up and worked in the round during finishing. Tahki Yarns Eureka Pullover

What Is Being Made

The Eureka Pullover is a classic pullover sweater designed by Teresa Chorzepa. This garment is knitted as a seamed, flat construction project available in four sizes: Small (bust 40"/101.5cm), Medium (bust 44½"/113cm), Large (bust 48½"/123cm), and XL (bust 53"/134.5cm). The finished length ranges from 20¾" to 23½" (52.5 to 59.5cm) depending on size selection. This advanced beginner-level project is ideal for knitters with foundational skills looking to expand their technique repertoire.

Techniques Used

The Eureka Pullover employs several key knitting techniques that define its construction and final appearance. The garment is worked flat, meaning pieces are knitted back and forth in rows rather than in the round, and then seamed together to create the finished sweater. This traditional flat construction method allows for precise shaping and straightforward pattern reading.

The pattern incorporates a provisional cast-on method using waste yarn and a crochet hook, which allows for seamless integration of stitches later in the construction process. This technique is particularly useful for creating clean edges and professional finishes. Decreasing techniques including K2tog (knit 2 together), P2tog (purl 2 together), ssk (slip, slip, knit), and the RDD (Right Double Dec) decrease are employed for shaping the garment. Additionally, yarn overs (yo) may be incorporated for textural or decorative elements.

Stitches Used

The Eureka Pullover features two primary stitch patterns that create its distinctive texture and visual interest:

  • K1, P1 Rib – This classic ribbed stitch is worked in two variations depending on construction method. When worked back and forth in rows, the pattern alternates knit and purl stitches across odd-numbered stitch counts, creating vertical columns of texture. When worked in the round on even-numbered stitch counts, the same alternating knit and purl sequence is maintained throughout each round. Ribbing provides elasticity and a fitted appearance, commonly used for cuffs, waistbands, and necklines.
  • Half Fisherman Rib – This textured stitch pattern is worked over odd-numbered stitch counts and creates a dense, dimensional fabric. The Half Fisherman Rib alternates between knit and purl stitches on the right side rows, while wrong-side rows feature purl stitches alternated with K1-b (knit 1 stitch in the row below). This technique of knitting into the row below creates the characteristic bumpy, cushioned texture that defines Fisherman Rib variations. The stitch pattern is repeated across rows to build the fabric.

The gauge for this project is 11 stitches and 24 rows over 4 inches (10cm) in Half Fisherman Rib. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements and garment fit.

Materials

The Eureka Pullover is designed to be knitted with Tahki Yarns Superwash Merino Bulky, a premium yarn composed of 100% superwash merino wool. The yardage requirements are 8 balls for Small (approximately 872 yards total), 9 balls for Medium (approximately 981 yards), 10 balls for Large (approximately 1,090 yards), and 11 balls for XL (approximately 1,199 yards). Each ball contains 3.5 ounces (100 grams) and provides 109 yards (100 meters) of yardage. The pattern specifies color #15 fern for the sample shown.

The project requires US size 11 (8mm) needles for the main fabric construction worked flat, as well as a US size 11 (8mm) circular needle measuring 16 inches (40cm) long for working the neckline. Additional tools include removable stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points, waste yarn for the provisional cast-on method, a yarn needle for seaming and weaving in ends, and a size L-11 (8mm) crochet hook specifically for executing the provisional cast-on technique.

Nice pattern! Very straightforward for a fairly novice knitter. The yarn itself feels amazing.
