The Exuberance Pullover is a classic knitted sweater designed by Rosemary Drysdale. This pullover is available in six sizes ranging from Small to 3X, with finished bust measurements from 36 inches (91.5 cm) to 56 inches (142 cm) and finished lengths from 23½ inches (59.5 cm) to 27 inches (68.5 cm). The garment features a traditional pullover construction with set-in raglan sleeves and a ribbed neckband, making it a versatile wardrobe staple suitable for various occasions.
This sweater is constructed using bottom-up seamed construction, meaning the pieces are knitted from the lower edges upward and then sewn together. The garment is worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, with the exception of the neckband which is picked up and worked circularly. The pattern employs raglan shaping for the armholes, a classic tailoring technique that creates diagonal seam lines from the underarm to the neckline. This shaping method is achieved through strategic decreases worked on right-side rows. The finishing process includes blocking the pieces to measurements, seaming the raglan lines, and sewing the side and sleeve seams before picking up stitches around the neck for the ribbed neckband.
The primary stitch pattern is Stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric by knitting on right-side rows and purling on wrong-side rows. The sweater begins with k2, p2 ribbing at the lower edge and neckline, which provides elasticity and a finished appearance. Decreases are worked using ssk (slip, slip, knit) and k2tog (knit 2 together) techniques to shape the raglan armholes. The neckband is finished with ribbing worked in the round and bound off loosely to maintain elasticity.
This pattern calls for Tahki Yarns DONEGAL TWEED, a yarn composed of 100% pure new wool. The yardage required ranges from 4 to 7 skeins depending on size, with each skein containing 3.5 ounces (100 grams) and 183 yards (167 meters). The sample shown is worked in color #859 bright olive. Knitting needles required include one pair of size 9 (5.5mm) straight needles for the main garment pieces and one size 9 (5.5mm) circular needle measuring 16 inches (40 cm) for the neckband. Additional supplies include stitch holders for holding stitches during construction and a yarn needle for weaving in ends and seaming pieces together. The recommended gauge is 14 stitches and 18 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in Stockinette stitch.
