Foreshore Tank by Tahki Yarns

What is Being Made

The Foreshore Tank is a sleeveless knitted top designed by Gabrielle Markle. This garment is available in seven sizes ranging from Small to 4X, with finished bust measurements from 35¾ inches (90.5 cm) to 59¾ inches (151.5 cm) and lengths from 26 inches (66 cm) to 29 inches (73.5 cm). The tank features a classic fitted silhouette with shaped armholes and a crew neckline, making it suitable for warm-weather wear.

Techniques Used

The Foreshore Tank is constructed using seamed construction, with pieces worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round. The design incorporates horizontal stripes as a primary design element, creating visual interest across the garment. The pattern includes essential shaping techniques such as armhole decreases worked at regular intervals and neck shaping to create a comfortable neckline. A ribbed waistband in K1, P1 rib provides structure at the lower edge of the tank.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette Stitch (St st): The primary stitch throughout the body of the tank, created by knitting on right-side rows and purling on wrong-side rows. This stitch produces the smooth, classic fabric base for the garment.
  • K1, P1 Rib: Used for the bottom ribbing and neckline finishing, alternating knit and purl stitches to create an elastic, textured edge that helps the garment maintain its shape.
  • Yarn Overs and Decreases: The pattern includes yarn over (yo) and knit two together (k2tog) stitches, which create decorative eyelet details. These are worked in a repeating pattern to add visual texture.
  • Decreases: Knit two together (k2tog) and slip, slip, knit (ssk) decreases are used for armhole and neck shaping to create a fitted silhouette.

Materials

The Foreshore Tank is designed to be knitted with Tahki Yarns COTTON CLASSIC, a 100% mercerized cotton yarn. Each hank contains 1.75 ounces (50 grams) and provides 108 yards (100 meters) of yardage. The pattern requires four coordinating colors from this yarn line:

  • Color #3003 Linen White (A): The primary color, used for the majority of the garment. Yardage requirements range from 6 hanks for Small to 12 hanks for 4X.
  • Color #3876 Dark French Blue (B): An accent color used in the stripe pattern. Requirements range from 1 to 3 hanks depending on size.
  • Color #3812 Light Blue (C): A second accent color for striping. Requirements range from 1 to 3 hanks depending on size.
  • Color #3202 Almond (D): A third accent color for the stripe design. Requirements range from 1 to 3 hanks depending on size.

The pattern calls for size 6 (4mm) needles to achieve the required gauge of 22 stitches and 30 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch. A size 6 (4mm) circular needle measuring 16 inches long is also needed for neckline finishing. Additional supplies include waste yarn or stitch holders for holding stitches, stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points, and a yarn needle for seaming the pieces together and weaving in ends.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as EASY, making it suitable for beginner knitters. The straightforward construction using basic stitches and simple shaping techniques allows newer knitters to develop fundamental skills while creating a wearable, finished garment.
