Tahki Yarns Greenport Tank
What is Being Made
The Greenport Tank is a sleeveless pullover vest designed by Teresa Chorzepa. This knitted slipover features a simple, classic construction suitable for warm-weather wear. The tank is available in four sizes ranging from Small to Extra Large, with finished bust measurements of 36 to 49 inches and a length of approximately 21½ to 23¾ inches. The garment is designed to fit with 2 to 4 inches of positive ease, making it a comfortable, relaxed-fitting piece.
Techniques Used
The Greenport Tank employs fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for beginner-level crafters. The garment is worked flat on straight needles for the body pieces, with a separate worked in the round section for the cowl neckline using a circular needle. Key construction techniques include:
- Casting on and binding off to establish and finish edges
- Armhole shaping through strategic bind-offs and decreases
- Decreasing stitches to create fitted armholes and shoulder shaping
- Increasing stitches using make-one techniques for shaping
- Circular needle work for the cowl collar component
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes essential knitting stitches that form the foundation of basic garment construction:
- Stockinette Stitch (St st) – The primary stitch used for the body, created by knitting on right-side rows and purling on wrong-side rows, producing a smooth, classic fabric texture
- Reverse Stockinette Stitch (Rev St st) – Used for the main body panels, creating a subtle textured appearance
- K2tog (Knit 2 Together) – A right-leaning decrease worked by knitting two stitches together through the front loops
- Ssk (Slip, Slip, Knit) – A left-leaning decrease created by slipping two stitches individually knitwise, returning them to the left needle in turned position, and knitting them together through the back loops
- M1L (Make 1 Left) – An increase technique that lifts the strand between needles from front to back and works it through the back loop to prevent holes
Materials
The Greenport Tank pattern calls for specific materials to achieve the intended drape and gauge:
- Yarn: Tahki Yarns HATTERAS, a 100% organic cotton yarn in color #16 sky blue. Yardage requirements range from 4 balls for the Small size to 6 balls for the Extra Large size. Each ball contains 3.5 ounces (100 grams) and provides 109 yards (100 meters) of yarn
- Needles: US size 11 (8mm) straight needles for working the flat body sections, plus a US size 11 (8mm) circular needle measuring 16 inches (40 centimeters) long for the cowl neckline
- Notions: Stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points, stitch holders for temporarily securing stitches, and a yarn needle for weaving in ends and seaming
Gauge and Fit
The pattern specifies a gauge of 10 stitches and 14 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) when working in Reverse Stockinette Stitch on US size 11 needles. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements. The tank is engineered to fit with positive ease, meaning the finished bust measurement will be 2 to 4 inches larger than the wearer's actual bust measurement, creating a comfortable, non-fitted silhouette appropriate for a casual sleeveless top.
