Tahki Yarns Hansen Pullover

What is Being Made

The Hansen Pullover is a classic knitted sweater designed by Rosemary Drysdale, offered in five sizes ranging from Small to 2XL. This pullover features a finished bust measurement of 37¼ (40½, 45, 48, 51) inches with 7-9 inches of positive ease for a comfortable, relaxed fit. The garment is worked flat on circular needles and then seamed together, making it an accessible project for advanced beginners and intermediate knitters seeking to develop their construction skills.

Techniques Used

The Hansen Pullover employs seamed construction, meaning the front and back pieces are knitted separately and then joined together at the sides and shoulders. The sweater is worked flat using circular needles in a back-and-forth motion rather than in the round, which simplifies stitch management and shaping. Key shaping techniques include bind-off decreases at the armholes for a structured fit and paired decreases (ssk and k2tog) worked on every fourth row to create smooth, tapered armhole edges. The pattern also incorporates shoulder shaping and neckline shaping to ensure proper garment fit and silhouette.

Stitches Used

This pattern utilizes several fundamental knitting stitches to create texture and structure:

  • Garter Stitch – knitting every row – appears in the ribbed cuff section at the beginning of the piece, creating a reversible, textured edge
  • Stockinette Stitch – alternating knit and purl rows – forms the smooth selvages (edge stitches) on either side of the main fabric
  • Textured Rib Stitch – a four-stitch repeat pattern alternating knit and purl columns – serves as the primary stitch pattern for the body of the sweater, creating vertical texture and subtle elasticity

The Textured Rib Stitch is worked over a multiple of four stitches plus two, with rows alternating between knit and purl sequences to build the characteristic ribbed appearance throughout the garment body.

Materials

The Hansen Pullover is constructed using Tahki Yarns Superwash Merino Twist, a 100% merino wool yarn that combines softness with durability and easy care. The yarn is available in color 03 stone for this pattern. Yardage requirements range from 6 hanks for smaller sizes to 9 hanks for the 2XL size, with each hank containing 3.5 ounces and 221 yards of yarn.

Needles required include US 7 (4.5mm) circular needles in a 32-inch length for the main fabric and US 6 (4mm) circular needles in both 16-inch and 32-inch lengths for ribbed sections and smaller circumferences. Additional supplies include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats, stitch holders for securing stitches during construction, and a yarn needle for seaming and weaving in ends. The recommended gauge is 21 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches in Textured Rib stitch on the larger needle, blocked.
