Tahki Yarns Hilton Head Pullover
What Is Being Made
The Hilton Head Pullover is an intermediate-level knitted sweater designed by Andi Javori. This pullover is a classic crewneck style available in five sizes ranging from Small to 2XL, with finished bust measurements from 44 inches to 61½ inches. The sweater is designed to fit with 10-12 inches of positive ease, providing a comfortable, relaxed fit. Length options range from 21½ inches in the smallest size to 25½ inches in the largest size, making this a versatile piece suitable for various body types and style preferences.
Techniques Used
This pullover is constructed using seamed construction, meaning the front, back, and sleeves are knitted as separate flat pieces and then sewn together. The sweater features horizontal stripes created through color blocking with white and navy yarn. The pattern is worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, which is a traditional approach for garments with seamed construction. A circular needle is used only for the neckband finishing. This method allows for precise shaping and makes it easier to work the striped design across the body and sleeves.
Stitches Used
The Hilton Head Pullover incorporates several fundamental knitting stitches and techniques. K1, P1 Ribbing is used for finishing details, providing elasticity and structure at the neckline and cuffs. The main fabric features a Lace pattern, which adds visual interest and texture to the sweater. Essential stitch techniques include knit and purl stitches as the foundation, along with yarn overs (yo) for creating the lace elements. Shaping is achieved through increases using M1L (Make 1 Left) and M1R (Make 1 Right) methods, which create new stitches without leaving holes. Decreases are worked using K2tog (Knit 2 Together) and Sk2p (Slip, Knit 2 Together, Pass Slipped Stitch Over), which is a left-leaning double decrease used for more dramatic shaping.
Materials and Gauge
The Tahki Yarns Hilton Head Pullover is worked in Tahki Yarns CORONADO, a luxury blend yarn composed of 90% cotton and 10% silk. This fiber content creates a breathable, elegant fabric with a subtle sheen. The yardage requirements vary by size: Small requires 8 balls of the main color white (color #01) and 3 balls of navy (color #19), while the largest size (2XL) requires 12 balls of white and 5 balls of navy. Each ball contains 1.75 ounces and 121 yards of yarn.
The pattern is worked on US size 8 (5mm) straight needles for the body pieces and a US size 8 (5mm) circular needle measuring 24 inches long for the neckband. The recommended gauge is 19 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches in the Lace pattern. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for obtaining the proper finished measurements and fit. Additional materials include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points, and a yarn needle for seaming the pieces together and weaving in ends.
Pattern Format
This pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF, making it convenient for digital access and printing. The format includes complete written instructions with standard knitting abbreviations, stitch pattern charts, and detailed schematics for all five sizes. The pattern is suitable for knitters with intermediate experience who are comfortable with seamed construction, working flat pieces, and managing color changes for striped designs.
