Product Description

Tahki Yarns Ketchum Pullover is a stunning women’s sweater knit in Donegal Tweed. The pullover features a mock turtleneck with a cable pattern around the neck, set-in long sleeves with all-over rib patterns, and a twist stitch pattern. Ketchum is knit flat in pieces from the bottom up and then seamed, and the neckband stitches are picked up along the neck edge and worked in the round. Tahki Donegal Tweed is a handsome Irish wool as one ply of 100% wool is twisted with complimentary-colored slubs for a timeless tweed look and tons of texture. Donegal Tweed is a classic and will make many beautiful projects that will last for years! The cable and twist stitch patterns are in written form only.

Tahki Yarns Ketchum Pullover

What Is Being Made

The Ketchum Pullover is a classic knitted sweater designed by Teresa Chorzepa. This pullover is available in five sizes ranging from Small to 2XL, with finished bust measurements from 37¼ inches (95 cm) to 51½ inches (131 cm). The sweater features a relaxed fit with 5–7 inches of positive ease and lengths ranging from 24 to 26 inches, making it suitable for various body types and style preferences. The pullover is constructed as a seamed, flat-worked garment, making it an accessible project for knitters of all skill levels.

Techniques Used

The Ketchum Pullover employs several key knitting techniques that add visual interest and texture to the finished garment. The pattern incorporates twist stitches and cable techniques as special stitch manipulations, including T2R (Twist 2 Right), T2L (Twist 2 Left), and C2F (Cross 2 Front). These techniques involve placing stitches on a cable needle and holding them either in front or in back to create crossed and twisted effects within the fabric.

The sweater is worked flat on straight needles, meaning the front and back pieces are knitted separately in rows rather than in the round. This flat-working method is then finished with seaming, where the individual pieces are sewn together using a yarn needle. The collar is worked on a 16-inch circular needle, allowing for seamless ribbed edging at the neckline. This combination of techniques makes the Ketchum Pullover an EASY-level project, ideal for beginner to intermediate knitters.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch pattern throughout the Ketchum Pullover is 2 x 2 Rib, a fundamental ribbed texture that alternates two knit stitches with two purl stitches across each row. This ribbed pattern is worked over a multiple of 4 stitches plus 2 edge stitches, creating vertical columns of texture that provide excellent stretch and recovery to the garment.

The pattern includes the following specialized stitch techniques:

  • T2R (Twist 2 Right): One stitch is placed on a cable needle and held in back while one knit stitch is worked, then one purl stitch is worked from the cable needle, creating a rightward-leaning twist.
  • T2L (Twist 2 Left): One stitch is placed on a cable needle and held in front while one purl stitch is worked, then one knit stitch is worked from the cable needle, creating a leftward-leaning twist.
  • C2F (Cross 2 Front): One stitch is placed on a cable needle and held in front while two purl stitches are decreased together, then one knit stitch and one knit stitch are worked from the cable needle, creating a crossed cable effect.

Additional stitch techniques include bind-off for securing edges and shaping, and decreasing (such as p2tog, or purl 2 together) for armhole and neck shaping. These decreases are worked strategically on right-side rows to create clean, sloped edges.

Materials and Tools

The Ketchum Pullover is designed to be knitted with Tahki Yarns DONEGAL TWEED, a 100% pure new wool yarn. The yardage requirements vary by size, ranging from 7 hanks for the smallest size to 10 hanks for the largest size. Each hank contains 3.5 ounces (100 grams) and provides 183 yards (167 meters) of yarn. The pattern calls for color #884 light grey, though the yarn is available in other colorways.

The recommended needle size is US 7 (4.5 mm) for the main body of the sweater, worked on a pair of straight needles. A 16-inch circular needle in the same size is required for working the ribbed collar. A cable needle is essential for executing the twist and cable stitches that appear throughout the pattern. A yarn needle (also called a tapestry needle) is needed for seaming the pieces together and weaving in ends.

The recommended gauge is 18 stitches and 22 rows per 4 inches (10 centimeters) when working the 2 x 2 Rib pattern in blocked gauge. Achieving the correct gauge is critical to ensure the
