Tahki Yarns Lithia Cardigan

What is Being Made

The Lithia is an intermediate-level knitted cardigan designed by Sandi Rosner. This garment is available in six sizes ranging from XSmall to 2X, with finished bust measurements from 31 inches (78.5 cm) to 52 inches (132 cm) and lengths from 24 to 28 inches (61 to 71 cm). The cardigan features a classic construction with front button closures and includes functional welt pockets for added practicality and style.

Techniques Used

The Lithia cardigan employs several intermediate knitting techniques that add visual interest and structural integrity to the finished garment. The construction method is worked flat, meaning the pieces are knitted in separate flat panels rather than in the round. The garment is seamed together, creating clean, professional-looking joins between the body and sleeves. The cardigan features cable details that add texture and dimension to the design. Functional welt pockets are integrated into the construction, providing both aesthetic appeal and practical storage. The front closure includes buttonholes positioned to accommodate eight buttons, and the cardigan is finished with a single hem for a polished edge.

Stitches Used

The Lithia pattern utilizes a combination of fundamental and decorative stitches to create its distinctive appearance. Stockinette stitch forms the base fabric in many areas, providing a smooth, classic knit surface. The pattern features a Texture Pattern worked over a multiple of four stitches plus one, which alternates between knit and purl rows to create visual interest. Specifically, the Texture Pattern is worked as follows: Row 1 (RS) purls one stitch, then repeats knit three stitches and purl one stitch across. Row 2 knits one stitch, then repeats purl three stitches and knit one stitch across. Rows 3 and 4 repeat this sequence. The pattern also incorporates K3, P1 Rib, a classic ribbed stitch that provides elasticity and structure, particularly useful for cuffs, hems, and fitted areas. Decreases are worked using standard techniques including ssk (slip, slip, knit) and k2tog (knit two together) to shape the armholes and neckline.

Materials

The Lithia cardigan is knitted using Tahki Yarns CLASSIC SUPERWASH, a 100% superwash merino wool yarn. Depending on the size, the pattern requires between 6 and 10 skeins of yarn, with each skein weighing 3.5 ounces (100 grams) and containing 218 yards (200 meters). The recommended color is #12 Cloudy Sky. The pattern calls for Size 6 (4mm) circular needles measuring 32 inches (80 cm) in length, or the size needed to obtain the correct gauge. Additional materials include stitch markers, stitch holders for holding stitches during construction, eight ⅞-inch (22 mm) buttons for the front closure, and a yarn needle for seaming and finishing.

Gauge Information

Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper fit. The Texture Stitch pattern should measure 23 stitches and 30 rows over 4 inches (10 cm). The K3, P1 Rib should measure 27 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches (10 cm). Knitters are strongly advised to take time to check gauges before beginning the project to ensure the finished cardigan meets the intended measurements.
