Tahki Yarns Marblemount Cardigan

What Is Being Made

The Marblemount Cardigan is an easy-to-knit cardigan designed by Rosemary Drysdale, available in five sizes ranging from Small to 2XL. This garment features a classic cardigan silhouette with a finished bust measurement of 38 to 53 inches and a length of 22½ to 25½ inches, making it suitable for various body types and preferences. The cardigan is constructed using a straightforward approach that makes it an excellent project for beginner knitters.

Techniques Used

The Marblemount Cardigan is worked flat on straight needles, meaning the pieces are knitted back and forth in rows rather than in the round. This flat construction method simplifies the knitting process and is ideal for beginners. The pattern incorporates striping as a primary design element, creating visual interest through alternating colors. The cardigan pieces are seamed together using the three-needle bind-off technique, which joins two pieces together while simultaneously binding off, creating a secure and finished seam.

Stitches Used

The Marblemount Cardigan employs fundamental knitting stitches that reinforce its beginner-friendly classification:

  • Stockinette Stitch (St st): The primary stitch used throughout most of the cardigan, created by knitting right-side rows and purling wrong-side rows, producing the classic smooth, V-textured fabric
  • K1, P1 Rib: Used for the ribbed cuff at the beginning of the pattern, created by alternating knit and purl stitches across the row, providing elasticity and a finished edge
  • Make 1 Left (M1L): An increase stitch that lifts the strand between needles from front to back, used for shaping the garment

Materials and Yarn

The Marblemount Cardigan is designed to be knitted with Tahki Yarns HATTERAS, a 100% organic cotton yarn. The yardage requirements vary by size: Small requires 4 skeins of the main color and 3 skeins of the contrasting color, while 2XL requires 6 skeins and 4 skeins respectively. Each skein contains 3.5 ounces of yarn with 109 yards of yardage per 100 meters. The pattern calls for color #19 lilac as the primary color (A) and color #01 white as the contrasting color (B) for the striped design.

Tools and Notions

Knitting this cardigan requires size 9 (5.5mm) needles, including one pair of straight needles for the main body pieces and one 40-inch circular needle for the neckband. Additional supplies include a spare size 9 needle for the three-needle bind-off technique, stitch holders for securing stitches during construction, stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats, and a yarn needle for weaving in ends and seaming pieces together.

Gauge and Construction Details

The pattern specifies a gauge of 12½ stitches and 19 rows over 4 inches in Stockinette stitch. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for obtaining the proper finished measurements. The back piece is cast on with 59 to 83 stitches depending on size, beginning with 8 rows of K1, P1 Rib for a finished edge. The striping pattern is created by working 4-row sections alternately in white (B) and lilac (A) yarns, establishing a consistent and visually appealing color repeat throughout the garment body.
