Product Description

Tahki Yarns Marrowstone Tee is a simple women’s pullover that has Whidbey do the heavy lifting! The sweater features a crew neckline and short sleeves, perfect for layering under a jacket and over a pencil skirt for a day at the office or worn over a pair of jeans. Marrowstone is knit flat in pieces from the bottom up and then seamed. The neckband stitches are picked up along the neck edge worked in the round. Tahki Yarns Whidbey is a loosely-plied cotton blend that will give your spring and summer projects the look of tweed without the weight of wool.

Tahki Yarns Marrowstone Tee Pattern Summary

What Is Being Made

The Marrowstone Tee is a classic knitted pullover top designed by Rosemary Drysdale. This garment is a versatile, fitted tee available in five sizes ranging from X-Small to X-Large, with finished bust measurements from 33¼ inches (84.5cm) to 50 inches (127.5cm) and lengths from 20½ inches (52cm) to 23½ inches (59.5cm). The sample shown in the pattern is size Small.

Techniques Used

The Marrowstone Tee is constructed using several fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginner to intermediate knitters:

  • Bottom-Up Construction: The garment is worked from the bottom edge upward, allowing knitters to try on the piece as it progresses and easily adjust length if needed.
  • Worked Flat: The front and back pieces are knitted flat on straight needles rather than in the round, making this an accessible project for knitters more comfortable with two-needle construction.
  • Seamed Assembly: After completing the individual pieces, they are sewn together using a yarn needle, creating clean, professional-looking seams.
  • Shaping Techniques: The pattern incorporates neck and shoulder shaping using standard decreases (k2tog and ssk) worked on right-side rows to create a fitted neckline and proper shoulder definition.
  • Stitch Holder Application: Stitches are placed on holders for the neckline, allowing for later pickup and finishing of the neck edge.

Stitches Used

The Marrowstone Tee is primarily worked in Stockinette Stitch (St st), which creates the smooth, classic appearance characteristic of traditional knit tops. This fundamental stitch alternates knit rows on the right side with purl rows on the wrong side, producing the familiar V-pattern texture.

Shaping is achieved through two essential decreasing techniques:

  • K2tog (Knit 2 Together): A right-leaning decrease worked on right-side rows by knitting two stitches together as one.
  • Ssk (Slip, Slip, Knit): A left-leaning decrease that creates balanced shaping by slipping two stitches knitwise, returning them to the left needle in turned position, and knitting them together through the back loops.

Materials and Gauge

The Marrowstone Tee is designed to be knitted with Tahki Yarns Whidbey, a luxury blend yarn composed of 54% cotton, 23% silk, and 23% polyamide. This fiber content creates a breathable, elegant fabric ideal for warm-weather wear. The pattern requires 5 to 9 balls depending on size, with each ball weighing 1.75 ounces (50g) and containing 120 yards (110 meters) of yarn. The sample shown uses color #208 Carnival.

Needles specified for this project include US 5 (3.75mm) straight needles for working the flat pieces and one US 5 (3.75mm) circular needle measuring 16 inches (40cm) for finishing details. The pattern gauge is 19 stitches and 22 rows over 4 inches (10cm) in Stockinette Stitch, making accurate gauge checking essential for proper fit.

Additional notions required include stitch holders for managing stitches during construction, a stitch marker for tracking pattern repeats, and a yarn needle for seaming the finished pieces together.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as beginner friendly, making it an excellent choice for knitters developing their fundamental skills. The straightforward construction using basic stitches and techniques, combined with the flat-worked approach, allows newer knitters to build confidence while creating a wearable, professional-quality garment.
