Tahki Yarns Meridian Cowl Pattern Summary

What Is Being Made

The Meridian Cowl is a beginner-friendly knitted neck accessory designed by Gabrielle Markle. This cowl is worked flat on straight needles and then seamed to create a continuous loop. With a finished circumference of 18 inches and a width of 8½ inches, it provides comfortable coverage for the neck and shoulders. The cowl is sized as a one-size-fits-most design, making it accessible for a wide range of wearers.

Techniques Used

This pattern employs two primary construction techniques that make it ideal for knitters developing their skills:

  • Worked Flat: The cowl is knitted on straight needles rather than in the round, which simplifies the construction process for beginners. This approach allows knitters to work back and forth in rows, making it easier to maintain consistent tension and track pattern repeats.
  • Seamed Construction: After completing the flat knitted piece, the cast-on and bound-off edges are seamed together to form the finished cowl shape. This seaming technique creates a professional closure and is a valuable skill for knitters to practice.

Stitches and Stitch Pattern

The Meridian Cowl features a classic combination of fundamental knitting stitches arranged in a visually interesting pattern:

  • Stockinette Stitch: The primary stitch throughout the pattern, created by alternating knit rows on the right side with purl rows on the wrong side. This creates the smooth, V-shaped texture characteristic of stockinette fabric.
  • Cable 4 Front (C4F): A decorative cable stitch that appears on rows 3 and subsequent pattern repeats. This stitch involves crossing four stitches to the front, creating the twisted, rope-like texture that gives the cowl its visual interest and name-inspired design.
  • Reverse Stockinette Stitch: Created through the purl stitches worked on right-side rows, providing textural contrast against the smooth stockinette sections.

The pattern uses stitch markers to help organize the design across the 41 cast-on stitches, creating symmetrical cable panels on either side of a stockinette center section. The four-row pattern repeat is straightforward and easy to memorize, making this an excellent project for building pattern-reading skills.

Materials and Tools

The Meridian Cowl requires minimal materials, making it an economical project:

  • Yarn: One hank of Tahki Yarns Gunnison in color #2005 fog. This yarn is a blend of 57% wool and 43% polyacrylic, offering warmth and durability with easy care. The single hank provides 185 yards of yardage at a weight of 3.5 ounces (100 grams), which is sufficient to complete the cowl.
  • Needles: One pair of US size 9 (5.5mm) straight needles, which are standard needles suitable for the yarn weight and gauge requirements.
  • Notions: Stitch markers to track pattern sections and a yarn needle for seaming the finished piece and weaving in yarn ends.

Gauge and Finished Measurements

The pattern specifies a gauge of 16 stitches and 24 rows over 4 inches when worked in stockinette stitch on US 9 needles and blocked to finished measurements. Checking gauge before beginning is essential to ensure the cowl reaches its intended dimensions of 8½ inches wide and 18 inches in circumference. Proper blocking after completion helps achieve these measurements and gives the finished cowl a polished appearance.

It did not include details on how to make the cable...so I improvised and followed a standard cable pattern.
