Tahki Yarns Mill Creek Pullover

What Is Being Made

The Mill Creek Pullover is a classic knitted sweater designed by Rosemary Drysdale. This pullover features a V-neck construction and is available in five sizes ranging from X-Small to X-Large, with finished bust measurements from 33¼ inches to 49¼ inches and lengths from 21½ inches to 24 inches. The sample shown in the pattern is size Small.

Techniques Used

This sweater is constructed using bottom-up knitting methodology, meaning the garment is worked from the lower edge upward. The pattern uses a seamed construction, with separate pieces knitted flat on straight needles that are later joined together. The front and back pieces are worked separately, and the V-neck shaping is achieved by working both sides of the front simultaneously with separate balls of yarn. This technique allows for precise shaping and symmetrical decreases on either side of the center neck opening.

Stitches Used

The Mill Creek Pullover employs fundamental knitting stitches suitable for beginner-level knitters:

  • Stockinette Stitch (St st) – The primary stitch used throughout the body of the sweater, created by knitting right-side rows and purling wrong-side rows to produce a smooth, classic fabric.
  • K1/P1 Rib – Used for ribbed edgings, this alternating knit and purl stitch creates stretchy, fitted bands that typically appear at cuffs, waistbands, and necklines.
  • K2tog (Knit 2 together) – A right-leaning decrease stitch used to shape the V-neck by reducing stitch count.
  • Ssk (Slip, Slip, Knit) – A left-leaning decrease stitch used in conjunction with K2tog to create balanced, symmetrical decreases on both sides of the V-neck.
  • M1L (Make 1 Left) and M1R (Make 1 Right) – Increase stitches created by lifting the strand between needles and knitting through it, used for shaping increases where needed in the pattern.

Materials

The Mill Creek Pullover is knitted using Tahki Yarns CLASSIC SUPERWASH, a 100% superwash wool yarn. The pattern requires 4 to 6 skeins depending on size, with each skein containing 3.5 ounces of yarn and 218 yards of yardage. The sample is worked in a three-color combination: color A is #13 denim (the primary color used for 4 to 6 skeins), color B is #01 white (1 skein), and color C is #12 grey (1 skein), allowing for colorwork or contrast details.

Needles required include US 6 straight needles for working the flat pieces and one US 6 circular needle measuring 24 inches long. Additional tools needed are stitch holders for securing stitches temporarily, a stitch marker or safety pin for marking pattern positions, and a yarn needle for weaving in ends and seaming pieces together.

The pattern specifies a gauge of 20 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches in Stockinette Stitch when blocked, which is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as EASY, making it an excellent choice for beginner knitters. The straightforward stitch patterns, simple shaping techniques, and clear construction method provide an accessible introduction to sweater knitting while still producing a polished, wearable garment.
