Tahki Yarns Ozette Pullover
What is Being Made
The Ozette Pullover is an intermediate-level knitted sweater designed by Sandi Rosner. This pullover is available in eight sizes ranging from X-Small to 4XL, with bust measurements from 34¼ inches (87 cm) to 62¼ inches (158.5 cm) and finished lengths between 22½ inches (57 cm) and 26 inches (66 cm). The garment features a sophisticated lace pattern combined with stockinette stitch, creating an elegant and breathable design suitable for warm-weather wear.
Techniques Used
The Ozette Pullover is constructed using a bottom-up approach, meaning the sweater is knitted starting from the lower edge and working upward toward the shoulders. The garment is worked flat on circular needles, allowing for easy stitch management and the ability to set the work down between knitting sessions. The finished pieces are then seamed together to create the complete pullover, which is a traditional method that provides structure and durability to the finished garment.
Cable techniques are incorporated into the design, adding textural interest and visual depth to the pullover. The combination of lace patterning with cables creates a refined aesthetic that elevates this sweater beyond basic stockinette construction.
Stitches Used
The Ozette Pullover employs several fundamental knitting stitches to achieve its finished design:
- Stockinette Stitch (St st): The primary stitch used throughout much of the garment, created by knitting right-side rows and purling wrong-side rows to produce the classic smooth, V-patterned fabric.
- K1, P1 Rib: An alternating knit-and-purl rib stitch used for ribbed edgings and cuffs, which provides elasticity and helps the garment maintain its shape.
- Lace Pattern: A sophisticated lace pattern worked over a multiple of 20 stitches plus 1, featuring yarn overs (yo) and decreases (k2tog and ssk) to create openwork sections. This pattern is combined with purl stitches to frame the lace motifs and add visual structure.
- Decreases: K2tog (knit 2 together) and ssk (slip, slip, knit) decreases are used throughout the lace pattern to create the characteristic holes and shaping of lace knitting.
- Yarn Overs (yo): These create the openwork eyelets that define the lace pattern and add breathability to the finished fabric.
Materials and Gauge
The Ozette Pullover is designed to be knitted with Tahki Yarns TIBURON, a blend of 50% organic cotton and 50% lyocell. This fiber composition creates a lightweight, breathable fabric ideal for warm-weather sweaters. The yarn is supplied in balls of 1.75 ounces (50 grams) with 110 yards (100 meters) per ball. Yardage requirements range from 11 balls for the X-Small size to 19 balls for the 4XL size, depending on the finished garment dimensions.
The pattern calls for size 5 (3.75mm) circular needles in two lengths: a 16-inch (40 cm) needle for ribbed edgings and neckline work, and a 24-inch (60 cm) needle for working the larger body sections. The specified gauge is 24 stitches and 30 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in Lace Pattern and Stockinette stitch. Achieving this gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements, and knitters are advised to take time to check their gauge before beginning the project.
Additional materials needed include stitch markers to denote pattern repeats and shaping points, stitch holders to temporarily secure stitches during construction, and a yarn needle for seaming the finished pieces together and weaving in ends.
