Tahki Yarns Pinehurst Wrap

What Is Being Made

The Pinehurst Wrap is an intermediate-level knitted shawl designed by Lisa Hoffman. This wrap measures 15 inches wide by 68 inches long, making it a generous accessory suitable for draping across shoulders or wearing as a lightweight wrap. The pattern is worked flat on circular needles, creating a rectangular garment with refined construction details.

Techniques Used

This wrap showcases cable knitting as its primary design technique. The pattern employs faux I-cord side edgings, which create a polished, finished appearance along both long edges of the wrap. The use of slipped stitches throughout the pattern—slipped as if to purl—contributes to the refined edge treatment and overall drape of the finished piece. The wrap is constructed using a repeating pattern structure that combines cable sections with stockinette stitch sections, allowing knitters to establish a rhythm while working.

Stitches Used

The Pinehurst Wrap utilizes several fundamental and intermediate knitting stitches:

  • Knit and Purl Stitches: The foundation of the pattern, creating stockinette stitch sections that provide contrast to the cable work
  • Cable Stitches: Two primary cable techniques are employed—C12F (slip 6 stitches to cable needle and hold to front, knit 6 from left needle, then knit 6 from cable needle) and C12B (slip 6 stitches to cable needle and hold to back, knit 6 from left needle, then knit 6 from cable needle). These 12-stitch cables create the dramatic textural elements throughout the wrap
  • Slipped Stitches: Used consistently at the edges with yarn held in front or back to create the faux I-cord edging
  • Decreases and Increases: The pattern incorporates k2tog (knit 2 stitches together) for decreases and m1 (make 1) for increases, used strategically in specific rows to shape the wrap

Materials and Tools

The Pinehurst Wrap requires 5 hanks of Tahki CLASSIC SUPERWASH yarn in color 12 cloudy sky. This yarn is 100% superwash wool, providing durability and easy care. Each hank contains 3.5 ounces of yarn with 218 yards of yardage, giving a total of approximately 1,090 yards for the complete project.

Knitters will need a Size 7 (4.5mm) circular needle measuring 24 inches (60cm), or the size needed to obtain proper gauge. Additional tools include a cable needle for managing the cable stitches, stitch markers to track pattern repeats, and a yarn needle for weaving in ends.

Gauge and Pattern Structure

Achieving proper gauge is essential for this project. In stockinette stitch, the gauge is 18 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches (10 cm). In the cable pattern, the gauge is 36 stitches and 32 rows over 4 inches (10 cm). The pattern begins with a set-up cast-on of 80 stitches and progresses through multiple sections: an initial Part 1, a Center section that repeats 24 times plus a partial repeat, Part 2, and a final partial repeat of the opening rows. This structured approach ensures the wrap reaches its finished dimensions while maintaining pattern symmetry.
