Tahki Yarns Provincetown Hoodie

What is Being Made

The Provincetown Hoodie is a knitted pullover sweater with an integrated hood, designed by Lynn M. Wilson. This garment is available in six sizes ranging from Small to 3X, with finished bust measurements from 35¾ inches (91 cm) to 56½ inches (143.5 cm). The hoodie is designed to be worn with 2–4 inches of positive ease for a comfortable, relaxed fit. The finished length ranges from 23¼ inches (59 cm) in the smallest size to 25½ inches (65 cm) in the largest size, making it a standard pullover length suitable for everyday wear.

Techniques Used

This pattern employs knitting worked in the round, a technique that creates seamless, tubular fabric by working continuously in circular rows rather than flat pieces sewn together. This method is particularly efficient for constructing sweater bodies and sleeves with minimal seaming.

The pattern utilizes several specialized knitting techniques:

  • Kitchener Stitch (Grafting)—a method for joining two sets of live stitches together invisibly, creating a seamless seam. This technique is used to graft stitches, with the yarn needle inserted alternately into front and back needles in a specific sequence to blend the two pieces together.
  • Single Crochet—a crochet technique used for the hood edging, worked from right to left by inserting the hook into stitches and drawing yarn through loops.
  • Stitch increases and decreases—shaping techniques used to expand and reduce stitch counts as needed for the garment's construction.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch pattern for this hoodie is Moss Stitch, which is worked using the larger needles. Moss Stitch is a textured, reversible stitch pattern created by alternating knit and purl stitches in a specific sequence, producing a dense, nubby fabric with visual interest on both sides. The gauge for this pattern is 13 stitches and 17 rounds per 4 inches (10 cm) when worked in Moss Stitch.

Materials and Tools

The Provincetown Hoodie is constructed using Tahki Yarns HATTERAS, a 100% organic cotton yarn. Each ball contains 100 grams and yields 109 yards of yardage. The color used in the pattern is #13 straw, a neutral, natural-toned shade. Yardage requirements range from 7 balls (approximately 763 yards) for the Small size to 12 balls (approximately 1,308 yards) for the 3X size.

The pattern requires a comprehensive set of needles and tools:

  • Two size 10½ (6.5 mm) circular needles—one 16 inches (40 cm) long and one 24 inches (60 cm) long—for working the body and larger circumferences in the round
  • One set of size 10½ (6.5 mm) double-pointed needles (dpns) for working smaller circumferences, such as sleeve caps
  • One spare size 10½ (6.5 mm) circular needle designated as a stitch holder for temporarily holding sleeve stitches
  • One set of size 9 (5.5 mm) double-pointed needles (dpns) for ribbing or other sections requiring a smaller gauge
  • One size I-9 (5.5 mm) crochet hook for working the hood edging in single crochet
  • Stitch markers, stitch holders, and a yarn needle for weaving in ends and grafting

The pattern is classified as EASY in difficulty, making it suitable for beginner-level knitters who have basic familiarity with knitting in the round and fundamental stitch techniques.
