Project Overview
The Rosebud Cardigan is an easy-to-knit cardigan designed by Teresa Chorzepa, suitable for beginners. This garment is available in seven sizes ranging from XS to 3X, with finished bust measurements from 33 inches to 55½ inches (84 to 141 cm) and length options from 30½ to 33¼ inches (77.5 to 84.5 cm). The cardigan features a 2-inch overlap at the front closure.
Construction Techniques
The Rosebud Cardigan is constructed using a bottom-up method, meaning the knitter begins at the lower edge and works upward toward the shoulders. The garment is worked flat on circular needles, creating individual pieces that are later seamed together. This approach allows for straightforward shaping and makes it accessible for knitters new to garment construction.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The cardigan is primarily worked in Stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric with a knit side and purl side. The ribbed edging uses a K2, P2 Rib pattern (a multiple of 4 stitches plus 2), which provides stretch and a finished appearance at the cuffs, neckline, and front bands.
Shaping throughout the pattern employs standard decreases and increases:
- K2tog (knit 2 together) for right-leaning decreases
- M1L (Make 1 left) for left-leaning increases, created by lifting the strand between needles and working through the back loop
- S2kp (slip 2 knitwise, knit 1, pass slipped stitches over) for centered double decreases
Materials and Gauge
The Rosebud Cardigan is knitted with Tahki Yarns Kaleidoscope, a durable blend of 86% superwash wool and 14% acrylic. The yarn is available in color #2426 Rose Garden. Yardage requirements range from 6 balls for the smallest size to 9 balls for the largest, with each ball containing 218 yards (200 meters) and weighing 3.5 ounces (100 grams).
The pattern is worked on size 9 (5.5mm) circular needles measuring 32 inches (80 cm) long, or the size needed to obtain the correct gauge. The recommended gauge is 17 stitches and 25 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in Stockinette stitch. Checking gauge before beginning is essential to ensure proper fit across all seven size options.
Additional Materials
Beyond yarn and needles, the pattern requires stitch holders for temporarily securing stitches during construction and a yarn needle for seaming pieces together and weaving in ends.
