Tahki Yarns Salvo Tee Pattern Summary

Garment Overview

The Salvo Tee is an easy-to-knit pullover sweater designed by Sylvia Snape. This beginner-friendly pattern creates a lightweight, versatile tee available in six sizes ranging from Small to 3X, with finished bust measurements from 33½ inches (85cm) to 51½ inches (131cm) and lengths from 22 inches (56cm) to 26 inches (66cm). The garment is ideal for warm-weather wear thanks to its fiber content and relaxed construction.

Construction Techniques

The Salvo Tee employs a bottom-up, seamed construction method, meaning pieces are knitted individually from the cast-on edge upward and then joined together. The pattern utilizes both flat knitting and circular needle work: the main body and sleeves are worked flat on straight needles, while the neckband is worked in the round using a circular needle. This mixed approach combines the simplicity of flat knitting for the larger pieces with the seamless finish of circular knitting for the neck opening.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The primary stitch pattern used throughout the Salvo Tee is the Wide Rib, a textured pattern that adds visual interest and subtle stretch to the finished garment. The Wide Rib pattern is worked over a multiple of 5 stitches plus 2 edge stitches and alternates between knit rows and a combination purl-and-knit rows that create the characteristic ribbed texture. Additionally, the pattern incorporates ribbed edging at the sleeve cuffs and neckline, worked in a simple 1x1 rib (alternating knit and purl stitches) to create neat, elastic finishes at these crucial garment openings.

Shaping and Fit Details

The pattern includes structured shaping for a tailored fit. Armhole shaping is achieved through strategic bind-offs at the beginning of rows, creating a smooth cap sleeve. Neck shaping is worked by binding off stitches in graduated increments on both sides simultaneously, forming a comfortable neckline. The sleeve caps are shaped with bind-offs and decreases to create proper sleeve head depth and cap ease, essential for comfortable arm movement and professional garment construction.

Materials and Gauge

The Salvo Tee is designed to be knitted with Tahki Yarns Newport, a blend of 67% cotton, 23% linen, and 10% polyamide. This fiber composition creates a breathable, durable fabric perfect for warm-weather wear. The yarn is available in color #06 lilac and comes in 1.75-ounce (50-gram) balls with 137 yards (125 meters) per ball. The pattern requires 5 to 10 balls depending on size.

Knitting this pattern requires size 6 (4mm) needles—both a pair of straight needles for the main pieces and a 16-inch (40cm) circular needle for the neckband. The recommended gauge is 22 stitches and 30 rows over 4 inches (10cm) when working the Wide Rib pattern. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements, and knitters are advised to take time to check their gauge before beginning the project.

Additional Notions

Beyond yarn and needles, the pattern calls for stitch markers to help track pattern repeats and shaping points throughout construction, and a yarn needle for weaving in ends and seaming the knitted pieces together.

Skill Level

Classified as an Easy pattern, the Salvo Tee is well-suited for beginner knitters. The straightforward construction, simple stitch patterns, and clear shaping instructions make this an excellent project for developing fundamental knitting skills while creating a wearable, practical garment.

This pattern is very easy to follow because it’s concise, accommodating and typed in a legible font. It’s accommodating because the text of every other size number is typed in bold letters so I can easily distinguish between the sizes. Also every other number for the amount of yarn balls corresponding to the size is typed in bold face. The alternating between plain and bold face text is continued throughout the pattern in reference to how many stitches pertain to each size. I’ve chosen to make...
