Tahki Yarns Santa Cruz Tank

What Is Being Made

The Santa Cruz Tank is a sleeveless pullover top designed by Rosemary Drysdale, offered in six sizes ranging from extra-small to 2X. This knitted garment features a fitted silhouette with positive ease of 0–2 inches, providing a comfortable, close-to-body fit. The tank is available in finished bust measurements from 32½ inches (XS) to 49½ inches (2X), with lengths varying from 22 inches to 25½ inches depending on size. The design combines ribbed and lace stitch patterns for visual interest and texture.

Techniques Used

The Santa Cruz Tank is worked flat on straight needles, then seamed together to create the finished garment. This construction method allows knitters to work individual pieces separately before joining them, making the project manageable for beginners. The pattern employs the three-needle bind-off technique for seaming pieces together as you bind off, which creates a secure and professional-looking seam while simultaneously finishing the edges.

Stitches Used

This beginner-friendly pattern utilizes two primary stitch patterns:

  • K1, P1 Rib: A classic ribbed stitch worked over an odd number of stitches, alternating knit and purl stitches to create vertical columns. This elastic stitch is typically used for cuffs and edges to provide structure and recovery.
  • Lace Pattern: A decorative stitch pattern worked over a multiple of 6 stitches plus 3 additional stitches. This lace pattern incorporates yarn overs (yo) for openwork, paired with decreases using knit 2 together (k2tog) and slip, slip, knit (ssk) techniques to maintain stitch count while creating the characteristic holes and texture of lace knitting.

Decreasing techniques featured include k2tog (knit 2 together), p2tog (purl 2 together), and ssk/ssp (slip, slip, knit or purl), all worked through the appropriate loops to create clean, directional decreases.

Materials and Tools

The Santa Cruz Tank is knitted using Tahki Yarns Whidbey, a blend of 54% cotton, 23% silk, and 23% polyamide. This fiber composition creates a lightweight, breathable yarn ideal for a sleeveless summer tank top. Each ball contains 1.75 ounces and yields 120 yards of yarn; the pattern requires 5 to 8 balls depending on the size being knitted.

The recommended needles are US size 8 (5mm) straight needles for working the flat pieces, along with a 16-inch circular needle of the same size for certain sections. The pattern calls for standard knitting notions including stitch holders to temporarily hold stitches, stitch markers to track pattern repeats and shaping points, and a yarn needle for weaving in ends and seaming the finished pieces together.

Gauge and Difficulty

The pattern specifies a gauge of 17 stitches and 22 rows over 4 inches in pattern stitch. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for obtaining the proper finished measurements. This is classified as an EASY pattern, making it suitable for beginner knitters who have mastered basic knit and purl stitches and are ready to learn lace techniques and garment construction through seaming.

The pattern is easy to follow. My experience has been that most knitting patterns run very large despite my efforts to adjust with needle size. This pattern runs very true to size. It does not look homemade. I like the finished product to look handmade not homemade. This pattern in the yarn suggested looks beautiful. I will wear mine over a tank due to the openness of the lace pattern.

This was well-written and easy to follow. I used it with Tahki Whidbey (which is a great yarn to work with). I liked the way bold text was used to correlate the sizes with the number of stitches and other measurements. Easy to read and stay accurate. The pattern was fun to knit and I really liked the design that the pattern created. Just doing the assembly and little finish ups on my project now!
