Tahki Yarns Selway Pullover
Project Overview
The Selway Pullover is an easy-level knitted sweater designed by Therese Chynoweth. This garment is worked using the bottom-up seamed construction method, meaning the body pieces are knitted flat from the lower edge upward, then seamed together to create the finished pullover. The pattern is available in six sizes ranging from extra-small through 2X, with finished bust measurements from 33½ inches (85 cm) to 54½ inches (138.5 cm) and lengths from 23½ inches (59.5 cm) to 27 inches (68.5 cm).
Knitting Techniques and Construction
This pullover employs a straightforward construction approach suitable for beginner knitters. The garment is worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, with separate front and back panels that are later seamed together. The pattern uses bottom-up construction, beginning with cast-on stitches at the lower edge of the back and front pieces, working upward to the armholes, then shaping the armholes and neckline before binding off. A circular needle is used only for the finishing neckband, which is worked after the main body pieces are complete.
The pattern incorporates shaping techniques including bind-offs for armhole and neck shaping, as well as Make 1 (M1) increases for gradual shaping. The Make 1 increase is worked by lifting the strand between needles from front to back and working through the back loop, twisting it to prevent holes in the fabric.
Stitch Pattern: Harris Tweed
The Selway Pullover features the Harris Tweed stitch pattern, a textured knit-purl combination that creates visual interest and depth in the finished garment. This pattern is worked over a multiple of 4 stitches and repeats over 8 rows.
- Row 1 (Right Side): *Knit 2, purl 2; repeat from * to end
- Row 2 (Wrong Side): *Knit 2, purl 2; repeat from * to end
- Row 3: Knit all stitches
- Row 4: Purl all stitches
- Rows 5 and 6: Repeat Rows 1 and 2
- Row 7: Purl all stitches
- Row 8: Knit all stitches
This eight-row repeat creates a classic textured fabric that is both visually appealing and forgiving for knitters still developing their tension control.
Materials and Gauge
The Selway Pullover is designed to be knitted with Tahki Yarns Whistler, a yarn composed of 80% superwash wool and 20% kid mohair. This fiber blend provides warmth, durability, and a soft hand while the superwash treatment makes the finished garment easy to care for. Yarn quantities range from 11 hanks for the smallest size to 18 hanks for the largest size. Each hank contains 1.75 ounces (50 grams) and measures 99 yards (90 meters), with the color used in this pattern being #02 Caramel, a warm neutral shade.
The pattern calls for size 6 (4mm) needles to achieve the correct gauge. The working gauge is 20 stitches and 30 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in Harris Tweed pattern. Obtaining accurate gauge is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements. A size 6 (4mm) circular needle measuring 16 inches (40 cm) is used specifically for the neckband ribbing.
Additional Notions
Beyond yarn and needles, the pattern requires a stitch marker for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points, and a yarn needle for seaming the finished pieces together and weaving in ends.
Garment Structure
The pullover consists of a back panel and front panel worked separately from the bottom up. The back is worked straight until the armholes are reached, then stitches are bound off to create the armhole shaping. The front follows the same initial construction but includes additional neck shaping worked over multiple rows as
