Tahki Yarns Striped Hoodie & Hat

Project Overview

This downloadable knitting pattern from Tahki Yarns features a coordinating striped hoodie and matching hat set designed by Lynn M. Wilson. The collection is available in two colorways: a boy's version featuring light chocolate milk, leaf green, oatmeal, and blueberry, and a girl's version with light chocolate milk, bubblegum pink, oatmeal, and light raspberry. Both pieces are crafted from Tahki Yarns COTTON CLASSIC, a 100% mercerized cotton yarn that provides breathability and durability for children's garments.

Hoodie Specifications

Size Range: This pattern accommodates four sizes from 6-12 months through 3 years, with finished chest measurements ranging from 20 inches (51 cm) to 26 inches (66 cm) and lengths from 8¾ inches (22 cm) to 11¼ inches (28.5 cm).

Construction Method: The hoodie is worked bottom-up using circular knitting needles, allowing for seamless construction and the ability to work in the round. This technique minimizes seaming and creates a smooth, professional finish ideal for children's wear.

Hat Specifications

Size Range: The matching hat is offered in the same four sizes with circumferences from 14½ inches (37 cm) to 19¼ inches (49 cm) and lengths from 7¼ inches (18.5 cm) to 8¼ inches (21 cm).

Construction Method: The hat is knitted in the round using double-pointed needles (dpn), a traditional technique for creating seamless, tubular garments that fit snugly around the head.

Techniques and Stitches

This intermediate-level pattern employs several essential knitting techniques:

  • Striped colorwork: The pattern features bold horizontal stripes created by alternating yarn colors throughout the rounds. A jogless color change technique is specifically detailed to minimize the visual jog that typically occurs where colors change when working in the round, ensuring a polished appearance where stripes meet.
  • Decreases: The pattern utilizes standard decrease stitches including k2tog (knit 2 together), p2tog (purl 2 together), and ssk/ssp (slip, slip, knit or purl) to shape the garments.
  • In-the-round knitting: Both pieces are worked circularly, which is a hallmark technique for creating seamless children's garments.

Materials and Tools

Yarn: The pattern calls for Tahki Yarns COTTON CLASSIC, a 100% mercerized cotton yarn available in multiple colorways. Each skein contains 1.75 ounces (50 grams) and yields 108 yards (100 meters). The hoodie requires between 5-8 skeins total depending on size and colorway, while the hat requires 1 skein.

Needles and Hooks: The pattern specifies size 6 (4mm) circular needles in both 16-inch and 24-inch lengths for the hoodie, size 5 (3.75mm) double-pointed needles for the hat crown, and a size F-5 (3.75mm) or G-6 (4mm) crochet hook for finishing details.

Notions: The pattern includes three ½-inch (13mm) buttons for closure, stitch holders for managing live stitches, and a stitch marker for tracking the beginning of rounds.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate, this pattern is suitable for knitters with foundational skills in circular knitting, working with multiple colors, and executing basic decreases. The jogless color change technique adds a professional finishing touch that elevates the final garment quality.

Im knitting now the largest size: Pocket is not centered . Had to adjust the stich count. 130 sts./2= 65 for front and back each. -44 for pocket ———- 21sts. /2 = 10 sts.p.side of pocket ( the extra st. added on to pocket.. I didn’t check the other sizes. Hope this will help. Simple math!
