Tahki Yarns Sunset Beach Wrap
What is Being Made
The Sunset Beach Wrap is an intermediate-level knitted shawl designed by Andi Javori. This wrap measures approximately 71½ inches (181.5 cm) long and 14 inches (35.5 cm) wide, making it a generous accessory suitable for layering or draping across the shoulders. The pattern is offered in one size and is presented as a downloadable PDF format for convenient access and printing.
Techniques Used
This wrap is constructed using several key knitting techniques that define its intermediate difficulty level. The garment is worked flat, meaning it is knitted back and forth on circular needles rather than in the round, which simplifies stitch management for many knitters. The design features seamless construction, eliminating the need for finishing seams after completion. The wrap incorporates striping through the strategic use of a main color and contrast color, creating visual interest and dimension throughout the piece. The color changes are worked into the pattern at specific intervals, with the contrast color introduced and then cut, allowing the main color to resume.
The wrap employs lace pattern techniques, which are central to its construction. Lace stitching creates an openwork fabric through the use of yarn overs and decreases, resulting in a lightweight, breathable textile with decorative holes and texture. This technique requires attention to stitch counts and pattern repeats but is achievable for intermediate-level knitters who are comfortable following detailed row-by-row instructions.
Stitches Used
The Sunset Beach Wrap utilizes fundamental knitting stitches combined in a lace pattern. Key stitches include:
- Knit (k) and purl (p) stitches, which form the basic fabric structure
- Yarn overs (yo), which create the decorative openwork characteristic of lace patterns
- Knit 2 together (k2tog), a right-leaning decrease that balances yarn overs and shapes the wrap
- Knit 1 front and back (k1-f/b), an increase stitch used to gradually expand the wrap from its narrow cast-on edge
- Purl 1 front and back (p1-f/b), a purl-side increase used on wrong-side rows
- Slip stitches (sl), used to create clean edges and transition between rows
The lace pattern repeats throughout the wrap, with rows alternating between increase rows that expand the width and pattern rows that establish the openwork design. The pattern is repeated thirteen times after the initial setup rows, building the wrap to its final dimensions of 119 stitches.
Materials
The Sunset Beach Wrap is knitted using Tahki Yarns TANDEM, a blended yarn composed of 28% cotton, 28% viscose, 28% nylon, and 16% acrylic. This fiber blend creates a yarn with excellent drape and breathability, making it ideal for a lightweight wrap. Each ball contains 1.75 ounces (50 grams) and provides 107 yards (98 meters) of yardage.
The pattern requires 4 balls of TANDEM in color #018 forest floor for the main color (MC) and 1 ball in color #28 sunburst for the contrast color (CC), allowing for approximately 428 yards of main color and 107 yards of accent color. The wrap is worked on one US size 8 (5mm) circular needle measuring 24 inches (60 cm) or longer, with the circular needle providing flexibility for managing the increasing stitch count as the wrap expands. A yarn needle is required for weaving in ends upon completion.
Gauge and Construction Details
The pattern specifies a gauge of 16 stitches and 24 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) when worked in the lace pattern with the main color yarn. Checking gauge before beginning is essential to ensure the wrap achieves its intended finished dimensions. The wrap begins with a small cast-on of just 3 stitches and gradually increases through strategic increases on alternating rows, eventually reaching 119 stitches by the completion of the pattern repeats. This gradual expansion creates the characteristic triangular or rectangular shawl shape that defines the wrap's silhouette.
