The garment is designed to be a versatile, everyday sweater suitable for various body types and preferences.

Techniques Used

This pullover is constructed using seamed construction with pieces worked flat on straight needles. The garment is built in separate sections—back, front, and sleeves—that are individually completed before being joined together with seams. This traditional method provides excellent shaping control and allows for precise fit adjustments across multiple sizes.

The pattern incorporates armhole shaping and neck shaping through strategic bind-offs, creating a tailored fit at the shoulders and neckline. Sleeve cap shaping is included to ensure proper sleeve fit when attached to the body. The neckline is finished with a circular needle for neck edging, providing a professional, polished edge.

Stitches Used

• Seed Stitch – The primary stitch pattern used throughout the body and sleeves. Seed stitch is created by alternating knit and purl stitches in a checkerboard pattern, producing a textured, reversible fabric with excellent drape and visual interest. This stitch requires careful attention to stitch orientation on each row to maintain the pattern.
• K2, P2 Rib – Used for the ribbed edging at the lower body and sleeve cuffs. This ribbing pattern creates elastic, fitted edges that help the garment maintain its shape and provides a professional finish. The rib is worked for 6 rows at the beginning of the back, front, and sleeves.

Materials and Gauge

The Wading River Pullover is designed to be knitted with Tahki Yarns MONET, a blended yarn composed of 52% cotton, 40% acrylic, and 8% nylon. This fiber blend creates a yarn that combines the breathability and comfort of cotton with the durability and elasticity of acrylic and nylon. Each ball contains 1.75 ounces (50 grams) and yields 60 yards (55 meters). The project requires 13 to 20 balls depending on the size being knitted.

The pattern is worked on size 6 (4mm) straight needles for the main body and sleeves, with a size 6 (4mm) circular needle measuring 16 inches (40 cm) long reserved for the neck edging. The recommended gauge is 17½ stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in Seed stitch. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements and fit.

Additional materials include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points, and a yarn needle for weaving in ends and seaming the garment pieces together.

Construction Overview

The back piece is cast on with 82 to 126 stitches depending on size and begins with 6 rows of K2, P2 Rib ribbing. The ribbing transitions into Seed stitch, which continues for the body length. Armhole shaping is incorporated through bind-offs at the sides, and shoulder shaping is completed before binding off the remaining stitches.

The front pieces are worked similarly to the back but include neck shaping that requires binding off stitches at each neck edge over multiple rows, creating a gradual, professional neckline. The front sections are worked simultaneously using separate balls of yarn to ensure matching shaping on both sides.

The sleeves are cast on with 54 to 58 stitches and also begin with 6 rows of K2, P2 Rib. After transitioning to Seed stitch, the sleeves are decreased evenly across the first row, then increased at the edges at regular intervals (every 8 rows) to create the proper sleeve length and cap shaping. The sleeve cap is shaped with bind-offs at the beginning of rows to create a fitted armhole.
