What Is Being Made

The Tala Shawl is an intermediate-level knitted wrap designed by Alison Green. This triangular shawl measures approximately 77 inches long by 25 inches wide at its widest end, making it a generous accessory suitable for layering or draping. The shawl is constructed using a distinctive two-part method: a long decorative band forms the left edge, with the main body of the shawl attached and built outward from this foundation.

Techniques Used

The Tala Shawl employs several key knitting techniques to achieve its elegant structure and visual interest. The construction begins with a long band worked first, which serves as the foundation and left edge of the finished shawl. Stitches are held on a circular needle and remain active throughout the project. The main body of the shawl is cast on separately using the cable cast-on method and is then attached to the band with SSK decreases at the end of each right-side row. This attachment method creates a seamless integration between the band and body sections.

The shawl incorporates strategic decreasing to shape the triangular form. Decreases are worked at the edge where the main body meets the long band, gradually reducing stitches to create the tapered shawl shape. The pattern also demonstrates gauge management across multiple stitch patterns, as different sections are worked in different stitch patterns, each with its own gauge requirement.

Stitches Used

The Tala Shawl features three primary stitch patterns, each with specific gauge requirements:

• Eyelet Pattern: Worked over an odd number of stitches, this pattern creates decorative openwork. The Eyelet Pattern repeats over 6 rows and combines knit-together and yarn-over stitches (K2tog, yo) on right-side rows to form the characteristic eyelet holes, alternated with garter stitch rows. This pattern is used for the long decorative band that forms the shawl's left edge.
• Garter Stitch: A fundamental knitting stitch created by knitting every row, garter stitch provides a textured, reversible fabric. This stitch is incorporated into sections of the shawl and contributes to the overall structure and drape.
• Stockinette Stitch: Created by alternating knit and purl rows, stockinette stitch provides a smooth, classic fabric surface and is used in portions of the shawl design.

The pattern also employs SSK (slip, slip, knit) decreases to attach the main body to the band and shape the shawl, and yarn-over increases within the Eyelet Pattern to create the decorative openwork details.

Materials

The Tala Shawl is worked in Berroco Ginkgo yarn, a fingering-weight yarn from Berroco, Inc. The project requires 6 balls of Berroco Ginkgo in colorway #9638 Sapphire, with each ball weighing 50 grams. The yarn is worked on a 32-inch (or longer) circular knitting needle in size 9 (5.50 mm), or the size needed to obtain the specified gauge. A removable stitch marker is used to track position throughout the construction.

Gauge is critical for this project and varies by stitch pattern: 16 stitches and 24 rows equal 4 inches in stockinette stitch, 16 stitches and 36 rows equal 4 inches in garter stitch, and 13 stitches and 32 rows equal 4 inches in pattern stitch. The pattern instructions emphasize checking gauge before beginning to ensure accurate finished measurements.
