The Tallulah Sweater is a knitted pullover garment designed by Martin Storey for Rowan. This intermediate-level sweater is available in nine sizes, ranging from 71–76 cm to 152–157 cm bust measurements (28–30 inches to 60–62 inches). The finished garment features actual bust measurements from 96 cm to 176 cm (37¾ inches to 69¼ inches), offering a comfortable fit across a wide range of body sizes.

Techniques Used

The Tallulah Sweater employs several key knitting techniques to create its structure and visual interest. The garment begins with a ribbed cuff worked on smaller needles, which provides elasticity and a neat edge. The main body is constructed using stockinette stitch, the foundational knit fabric that creates a smooth, classic appearance. Color blocking is incorporated through a multi-yarn construction, with the design featuring distinct color sections that are joined at specific points during knitting. Armhole shaping is achieved through strategic cast-offs and decreases, creating a fitted sleeve cap. The pattern includes decreasing rows that are worked on the wrong side to shape the garment while maintaining stitch integrity.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch throughout the Tallulah Sweater is stockinette stitch (st st), which forms the main fabric of the back and body sections. The ribbing at the cuff and waist uses a knit 2, purl 2 rib pattern (K2, P2), which creates vertical lines and provides stretch. Decreasing techniques include knit 2 together (K2tog) and knit 3 together (K3tog), which are used in structured decrease rows to shape the armholes and adjust stitch counts at specific intervals. Materials: Yarn and Needles

The Tallulah Sweater is designed to be knitted with Rowan Summerlite DK, a lightweight yarn supplied in 50-gram balls. The pattern calls for three coordinating colors:

• Yarn A: Favourite Denim (color 469) – the primary color, used for the main body. Quantities range from 7 balls for the smallest size to 13 balls for the largest size.
• Yarn B: Sailor Blue (color 470) – a secondary color used for contrast sections. Requirements range from 3 balls to 5 balls depending on size.
• Yarn C: Silvery Blue (color 468) – a tertiary color used for accent details. Quantities range from 2 balls to 3 balls across all sizes.

The pattern requires two needle sizes to achieve proper fabric tension. 3¼mm (US size 3) needles are used for the ribbed cuff and initial cast-on, creating a tighter, more elastic fabric. 3¾mm (US size 5) needles are used for the main body in stockinette stitch. The recommended tension is 22 stitches and 30 rows to 10 centimeters measured over stockinette stitch using the 3¾mm needles, ensuring consistent sizing across all garment dimensions.
