The Winter Breeze Collection features the Eliza hat and scarf set, a coordinated pair of intermediate-level knitting projects designed by Ursula O'Connor. This collection combines a classic knit hat with a matching scarf, both crafted using the same yarn and complementary stitch patterns for a cohesive winter accessory ensemble.

Eliza Scarf

The scarf is a rectangular accessory measuring 9 inches wide by 57 inches long (23cm × 145cm). The scarf begins with a garter stitch foundation, transitions into a textured reversible pattern, and finishes with decorative fringing.

Scarf Construction & Techniques:

• Cast on 33 stitches using size US 10½ (7mm) needles and work 2 rows of garter stitch
• Change to size US 11 (8mm) needles for the main pattern section
• Work a four-row repeating pattern combining knit and purl stitches to create texture: Row 1 knit all stitches, Row 2 knit all stitches, Row 3 alternates purl and knit (P1, *K1, P1*), Row 4 alternates knit and purl (K1, *P1, K1*)
• Continue the pattern repeat until the scarf reaches full length, ending on a wrong-side row
• Return to size US 10½ (7mm) needles and work 2 final rows of garter stitch
• Cast off and add 6-inch (15cm) fringing attached at equal intervals along both ends

Eliza Hat

The hat is a fitted cap with a finished width of 19 inches (48cm) around the head. The hat features a stockinette stitch body, transitions into a textured patterned section, and finishes with a crown shaping sequence using decreases.

Hat Construction & Techniques:

• Cast on 65 stitches using size US 10½ (7mm) needles
• Work 6 rows of alternating knit and purl rows (stockinette stitch) to create a smooth ribbed cuff effect
• Change to size US 11 (8mm) needles and work the same four-row pattern repeat used in the scarf (alternating knit rows with purl-and-knit textured rows)
• Continue the pattern until the hat measures 5 inches (12.75cm) from the beginning of the pattern section
• Switch to garter stitch and begin crown shaping with a series of decreases: K2tog (knit two together) reductions worked at regular intervals across multiple rows, progressively reducing from 65 stitches to 57, then 49, then 41, then 33 stitches
• Complete the hat with a decorative pompom attached to the crown

Pompom Instructions: The pattern includes instructions for creating a hand-made pompom using two cardboard circles (2¾ inches/7cm in diameter) with ½-inch (1.5cm) center holes, a traditional method for adding a finished decorative element to the hat crown.

Yarn & Materials
