Titchwell Sweater by Quail Studio – Mode at Rowan Alpaca Cotton

What is Being Made

Titchwell is an intermediate-level knitted sweater designed by Quail Studio for Mode at Rowan. This top-down in-the-round construction sweater is available in nine sizes, ranging from chest measurements of 71–76 cm (28–30 inches) up to 152–157 cm (60–62 inches), making it suitable for a wide range of body types. The garment features a classic pullover silhouette with set-in sleeves and is worked seamlessly from the neckline downward.

Construction Technique

The Titchwell sweater employs a top-down, in-the-round construction method, which is a popular modern knitting approach that allows knitters to try on the garment as it progresses and adjust length easily. The body is worked circularly from the neck down, with the back shoulder section established first. Strategic increases are incorporated at regular intervals to shape the garment and create proper fit across the chest and shoulders. The pattern uses stitch markers to denote key shaping points, particularly at the back neck and shoulder sections, ensuring accurate increases and symmetrical construction. The sleeves are worked separately using double-pointed needles, a traditional method for creating seamless cylindrical sections in knitting.

Stitches and Stitch Techniques

The primary stitch used throughout Titchwell is stockinette stitch (st st), which creates a smooth, classic fabric with a flat knit surface on the right side and bumpy purl texture on the reverse. The pattern begins with a purl row to establish the foundation, then transitions into stockinette stitch for the main body. Shaping is achieved through strategic increases (Inc 1 st) worked at specific intervals—initially every 10th row, then every 8th row, followed by every 6th row, and finally every 4th and 5th row combinations depending on the size being knitted. These graduated increases create a smooth, well-proportioned fit that accommodates the natural width of the shoulders and chest.

Yarn and Materials

Titchwell is designed to be knitted using Alpaca Cotton yarn from Mode at Rowan, a blend fiber that combines the softness and breathability of cotton with the luxurious warmth and drape of alpaca. The yardage required varies by size: smaller sizes need 8 balls of 25-gram yarn, while the largest size requires 17 balls. The pattern was photographed in two colorways—Foliage Green 018 and Feather Grey 013—showcasing the yarn's rich color depth and smooth finish. The recommended needle size is 3.75mm (UK size 9 / US size 5), available in three configurations: a pair of straight needles for flat sections, a circular needle measuring no more than 90–170 cm depending on size for working the body in the round, and a set of four double-pointed needles for sleeve cap shaping. The pattern specifies a tension of 23 stitches and 31 rows to 10 centimeters measured over stockinette stitch using 3.75mm needles, which is essential for achieving the correct finished garment measurements.

Additional Notions

Beyond yarn and needles, knitters will need stitch markers to track shaping points and maintain pattern accuracy, and stitch holders to temporarily secure stitches during construction, particularly when transitioning between sections or setting aside stitches for later joining.
