Product Description
Trendsetter N Cabled Border Poncho
What Is Being Made
The Trendsetter N Cabled Border Poncho is a beginner-friendly knitted poncho designed by Barry Klein. This garment is constructed as a pull-over style poncho that fits bust sizes 36, 42, and 48 inches. The poncho features a distinctive cabled border frame that wraps around the perimeter, with a stockinette stitch body creating a classic, wearable design suitable for various occasions and seasons.
Construction Technique
This poncho is built using a modular construction method that combines multiple components. The pattern begins with two separate cabled border strips that are knitted lengthwise, then stitches are picked up along the side edge of one border strip to begin the main body. The body is worked in a rectangular shape with the cabled borders integrated at the sides. After the body is complete, the second cabled border strip is sewn to the bind-off edge to create a finished frame. The poncho is then folded in half lengthwise with the right-side markers meeting, and the side edges are seamed closed to create the final poncho shape. A single crochet edging finishes the neckline.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette Stitch: The primary stitch for the poncho body, created by knitting on right-side rows and purling on wrong-side rows, producing a smooth, classic fabric
- Cable Stitch: Used in the decorative border, created by slipping 3 stitches to a cable needle and holding in front, knitting 3 stitches, then knitting the 3 stitches from the cable needle, producing a twisted rope-like texture
- Single Crochet: Applied as a finishing edge around the neckline for a polished, secure edge
Materials and Tools
This project uses Trendsetter Yarns Basis yarn in color #28846-7 (with variations 8 and 9 available), with each skein weighing 50 grams. U.S. size #6 knitting needles are required for the main knitting, and a size D crochet hook is needed for the neckline finishing. The gauge is 24 stitches over 4 inches when working stockinette stitch with the specified needle and yarn.
