Trendsetter Yarns Dune Ribbed Fan Pullover

What is Being Made

The Trendsetter Yarns Dune Ribbed Fan Pullover is a knitted pullover sweater designed by Just Jan Designs. This garment features a classic pullover construction with a decorative fan stitch pattern integrated into the front panel. The sweater is available in five finished bust sizes: 36", 40", 44", 48", and 52", with a finished length of 25". This makes it a versatile design suitable for various body measurements and fit preferences.

Techniques Used

This pullover is constructed using bottom-up seamed construction worked flat on straight needles. The garment is knitted in separate pieces—back and front panels are worked individually from the cast-on edge upward to the shoulder, then seamed together. Working flat (back and forth in rows rather than in the round) allows for easier pattern management and shaping, particularly when incorporating the ribbed and fan stitch elements. The pieces are shaped at the armholes and neckline through strategic decreases and bind-offs to create proper fit and garment structure.

Stitches Used

The Dune Ribbed Fan Pullover employs two primary stitch patterns:

  • Corrugated Rib: A basic alternating knit and purl pattern (Row 1: Knit; Row 2: Purl; Row 3: Purl; Row 4: Knit) that creates vertical texture and elasticity. This stitch is used strategically throughout the garment.
  • K2/P3 Rib: A more complex ribbed pattern worked as *Knit 2, Purl 3* on right-side rows and *Purl 2, Knit 3* on wrong-side rows. This creates a distinctive vertical ribbed texture that forms the foundation of the back panel and portions of the front.
  • Fan Stitch Chart: The front panel features a 24-stitch charted fan motif worked twice across the width, creating decorative fan-shaped elements that contrast with the ribbed background. This chart pattern is maintained throughout all shaping to preserve the design integrity.

All stitch patterns are carefully maintained throughout armhole and neckline shaping, ensuring the visual design remains cohesive across the finished garment.

Materials

This pattern calls for Trendsetter Yarns Dune (color #134), with yardage requirements of 7, 8, 9, 10, or 12 50-gram balls depending on the finished size selected. The yarn is worked on Trendsetter Needles size #11. The gauge is established at 13 stitches equals 4 inches when measured over K2/P3 ribbing, which is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements. The yarn weight and needle size combination creates a fabric with good drape and stitch definition suitable for displaying both the ribbed and fan stitch patterns.
